Hi all

There is a conference that opened a spot last minute and I have a week to submit a proposal. The area is on music education for at risk kids - gangs and jail. I've consistently used the Patriot's Way to build my program; The team, next man up, do your job well, ignore the noise, etc. But it would be great if you guys could chip in with any useful insight, philosophy, specific tools and actions, etc.

Here are some areas
1. Achievements by the team since BB.
2. Team building concepts, roster management
3. Scheme and individual player development
4.Scouting and evaluation
5. Coaches and coaching
6. Strategy, Tactics and adjustments
7. Intangibles, motivation, trust, direction etc.

Thanks.

Edit: I don't mean that you have to relate it to the music program. I can do the relating. I just need some help narrowing BB's core principles to his football.

Not meant facetiously: what exactly are you asking for help with? After reading this, I have no earthly idea.

I think you should redirect your request to Josh Norman and Odell Beckham Jr.

I'd spend time on facing adversity and how players who commit to a program can rise above the problems that plague their former classmates who didn't make it out.

I'd also talk about how Belichick often seems to find more value in a bad game like the KC game last year. Using failure as an opportunity to grow.

So are you basing your music education program for at risk kids on the core values and concepts of the Patriot Way?

If I'm on the right track...(great idea btw):

I think Bill's identification of team captains and leaders is crucial to developing young players on and off the field. You just know for a fact that you'll never see Slater, Nink or Mayo in the headlines even for the most minor things. Having great coaches (or music teachers in your case) is, of course, essential, but often the undertaking of an at risk kid by one of his peers generates the best response from these kids in terms of sticking to the straight and narrow.

You have to find a way to link to the team concept in general. What would that be? Their classmates? A band / group they perform in? It has to be a natural fit, otherwise, it will be hard to force some of the Patriots concepts into this program.

One big thing I took away from this year was how if you put the attention on yourself and create a distraction, it is selfish and it hurts the team. Brady and Bruschi both mentioned that with respect to what Greg Hardy is doing in Dallas. Not sure how you'd fit that into the program though, although I bet at-risk kids often act out in an attempt to get attention.

Have a killer instinct and pour it on your opponent whenever possible. Not sure how this might apply to music, but there you go.

Maybe bring up malcolm butler? Goes from unwanted and undrafted to one of the top corners in the league.

1) BB coaches to his players' strengths, and doesn't ask them to do what they don't do well.

2) ???

3) Symphony.

Also, versatility is invaluable, and quality depth makes for a stronger unit that a few superstars + jags.

Here is my advice...do not spend much time going over the finer points of the "Roger Goodell School of Integrity" program.

Play to the strengths of your group. If you have a great brass section, but a mediocre woodwinds section, pick pieces to perform that show off the brass section.

You put them in a position to succeed tremendously as a group, so when everyone is ranting and raving and singing their praises, they can all be proud to be a part of it. You don't single out the brass for their greatness, even if you're recognizing it tacitly by highlighting them. Every person in the group contributes and it is a group success or failure.

--Leadership and setting examples for all
--Overcoming any and all obstacles, which obviously pertains to these kids/at risk offenders
--Focusing on the team effort, collectively speaking (no one person is bigger than the sum of the parts)
--Ignoring worthless, outside opinions and remaining focused on the bigger picture
--Realizing that tough times will come which seem like the end of the world, but remaining dedicated will eventually prove to be key (examples are obviously spygate/deflategate/Brady's missed season)
--Giving others a chance to prove themselves when the majority opposes the idea or gives up on them
--"Winning" a spot on the team by showcasing certain traits, even though you have weaknesses in others
--Never giving up...period
--Hard work and dedication, late hours, making sacrifices
--Staying humble, even when seeing consistent success. You never know when life will pull the rug from underneath you
--Focusing on the positives that others do well, rather than the negatives which any idiot can plainly see. This also goes hand in hand with attitude, and how you should perceive/treat others
--Thinking outside of the box at times and staying ahead of the current system/curve
