Is it? Think of it from his perspective. He is the first Black HC of one of the most successful NFL franchises while Black HCs are a tiny minority. He is proud of it as he should be. Same thing with a lot of firsts (e.g. first in family to graduate university, phd...). Just a milestone worth being proud of.

There have been black head coaches for decades, but not in Boston.

Perhaps you believe that Boston hasn't been perceived as having an issue with race over the decades. Try googling. Even try googling environment for black athletes in Boston.

Mayo believes that that the first black HC is a big deal. You are certainly free to disagree.

I don't care what transpired the last couple of years, you don't disrespect the guy that drafted you, coached you to an all pro level, that gave you an opportunity to coach on the Patriots and someone that mentored you. There is more in that one paragraph than Mayo offered in the entire press conference and he was coming in to a new franchise.
