Mayo seemingly blaming Bill for the state of the roster

First off…it’s a sh!t question that’s serves no purpose other than to put Mayo in a catch 22. I’m sure this question was asked post game after a bad loss so he gave about as a good a response as to be expected in that frustrating situation.

The media's job is to generate and sell clicks.

A head coach's job is to not create distractions.

One succeeded, one failed.

By not saying he went there......he went there.

"NFL Rosters year to year are ebbs and flows." would have been an appropriate response.

BB or Wolf ....not cool.
Some on here are acting like Mayo was cornered with no way out. There were plenty of ways he could have answered it without anyone giving his response a second thought while still conveying the message he knows the roster needs to improve. Instead he basically said blamed Bill and it wouldn't really be a stretch to say he could be blaming Wolf who was a personnel guy last year.
Ian needs to change the name of this place from Patsfans.com to Billfans.com. They hate their team. Root against them just to satisfy their Bill obsession. Create crap threads like this to regurgitate their hate for the 1,000th time. This place has become so very sad.
I was accused of being a Bill basher and told to go root for another team over and over at any mild criticism over the years. Now if I say anything negative about Mayo I accused of being a Bill bobo lol. I know some of you guys still believe in Santa Claus put on your footie pajamas every Sunday to watch the game but the purpose of this forum is to discuss the team. It isn't all sunshine and rainbows. You don't like the thread don't click on it. Instead you come in here complaining with your little boo hoo post. One of my biggest gripes with Bill down the stretch was the excuse making and subtle finger pointing as things fell apart down the stretch. I am not going to ignore it when the new coach does the same thing.
Whenever I've said that Mayo has done nothing to warrant any HC position let alone replace BB (I said that when he was first hired), I've gotten ridiculed. Time will prove me correct.
I was certainly in the "move on from Bill" camp and still feel it was the right move but Mayo certainly wasn't my first choice. My main concern was that he was a defensive guy and also had no experience outside Foxboro and Bill so he didn't have many connections to build a staff. My fears seem to have been realized as AVP doesn't look like he is anything close to innovative and hasn't displayed any ability to adjust on the fly or tailor a game plan to our guy's strengths and Covington's defense seems to have regressed pretty badly. Sprinkle in some of the freelancing accusations and frustration from some of the guys on offense Mayo's reputation as a culture guy isn't really showing through yet.

Tbf , nobody else wanted to join the patriots. That's how low we have stunk up.

Free agents, coaches everyone is running away from us. Firstly we need to change the perception before we start to make the upward climb.

We are no longer the Brady patriots. It's going to take a while to create the Maye- Mayo patriot identity.

If we show progress , I think that should do for now . Last game was a huge step forward. With some injury luck and return of players we might become even better.
Even during the Dynasty, players still used the Pats to get better offers from the team they really wanted to go to. Derrick Mason and Steve Smith are the two biggest offenders.
Eh. That's not really a good thing to have that much cap room. It means you have no talent.

Mayo does need to take accountability and not blame the players every week after we lose.
Even Carroll blamed himself whenever they lost and promised to get them ready for the next game - and they had a good team.

Mayo has a bad team and yet he blames them.

The Pats have also spent a **** ton of money on players already on the team and they are lucky to be 1-5.

Odd considering the best players we have outside of QB are the ones who were already here.

Also odd considering Wolf has been a main player in the collaboration station since 2021, he presumably chose Mac and had to talk BB into taking him.

Hey guys, remember when Bill took on a roster with overpaid players and no young prospects on the roster?

Did he blame Grier in 2000 when that roster was rough?

Both Bill and now Jerod knew exactly what they were getting themselves into - especially Jerod being there for 5 years. This is now the 2nd jab I've seen him take at Bill.

I remember distinctly BB talking about the poor shape of the roster when he took over, and a lot more directly than anything Mayo said. It was part of his explanation for keeping 4 QBs - that there weren't enough good players to consider keeping them at other positions.

A bit of additional context as to where this came from. Not sure if it makes it better or worse.
Jerod Mayo: Patriots had a lot of holes on the roster, rebuild isn't a one-year thing
Mayo said on WEEI this morning that the Patriots made important strides in building the roster through the draft and free agency this year, but that he never thought he would have the roster construction completed in 2024.

“We had a lot of holes on the roster that we felt, coming out of the draft, that we addressed. Now, free agency, we still felt like we signed the best offensive lineman in Mike Onwenu, and re-signing some of our players, which was definitely part of it. Once again, this isn’t a one-year thing in my mind. It’s going to take time to continue to build out the roster, and that’s how it is,” Mayo said.

Mayo said part of the Patriots’ goal for 2024 is to give young players enough playing time to know where they’re set for the future and where they still need to upgrade in 2025.

“From a roster standpoint, just in general, especially with our younger players, we had to see what we have this year, no matter what the record is. When we get out of this season, we need to know exactly what we have from a talent standpoint and then fill the holes that we need to fill,” Mayo said.

Asked why the roster was in such bad shape when he got the job, Mayo didn’t answer directly.

“You tell me,” Mayo said. “I’m not doing that one.”

Also odd considering Wolf has been a main player in the collaboration station since 2021, he presumably chose Mac and had to talk BB into taking him.

I've seen the video of the pick. BB doesn't seem overly excited, but he is clearly the one in charge and the one making the final decision.

I am sure Mayo will backtrack on this in another 48 hours but it is pretty easy to read between the lines on this one. While agree he is mostly right I don't love the finger pointing and excuse making. Him and Wolf had the opportunity this offseason to fix the offensive line and they gambled on a guy who quit the team and some rookies.

The best answer to a loaded question like that is what Bill would say- I’m focused on the players we have this year. Don’t have a problem with what mayo said here but I’m sure he will learn to say nothing when he should.

Still fighting the good fight eh

I took it as a shot to 3 people: BB, Wolf, Kraft not necessarily in that order

I know it sucked at the time being turned down BUT has anyone looked at the stats so far for both Aiyuk and Ridley? Aiyuk hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire this year and yesterday Ridley on 8 targets, ZERO catches. Polk was trashed yesterday, can you imagine our 20 something million wr giving us that stat line? Dodged a couple bullets.

The Commanders staff inherited a 4-13 roster just like the Patriots but they improved it.

Bill was so bad they pretty much resigned all of his players to long term deals, how are those 2 WRs Wolf drafted looking? Like Bill never left when it comes to drafting WRs.

Just full of excuses, in the NFL 90% of the time you're going to inherit a mess of a team lacking talent when you're a new regime they didn't inherit any kind of disastrous contracts or cap issues, they had a top 3 pick and plenty of cap space to improve the roster.

If you're building your own team you would rather inherit the cap space and lack of bad contracts than a handful of overpaid players.

I'm really trying hard not judge Mayo to quickly.

But Everytime he opens his mouth I want to punch him in the face.

Ultimately I don't care about press conferences and what happens on the field is what counts.

On one hand he is 1-5 on the other hand Maye looked pretty good so I'm still going to hold off judgement.

Step 1: Hire AVP as the OC, who isn't a very good OC, but is good at developing QBs and putting in the bones of the west coast offense

Step 2: Have him transform Maye into an NFL-ready product

Step 3: Play Maye after a few weeks to show the rest of the league that your QB is good

Step 4: Fire AVP in the offseason

Step 5: Hire a new innovative OC, still running the west coast offense, who will be attracted by the potential of your QB

Step 6: Sign better free agents with your gobs of cash, who will be attracted by the QB and the more innovative OC

Tbf, Daniels has played 6 games, maye has played just 1. Baker has not played a single game while Polk had some issues in 1st game with maye.

Let's all have some patience. Commanders already had a bonafide wr1 in terry mclaurin. That's a huge release valve. Noah Brown is also coming along well. Rest all are meh.

Commanders are running phenomenally well and that's due to Oline. They got a bit lucky. If lowe gets healthy I think we might have lucked into brown, Lowe , Jordan and onwenu as starters and just 1 more spot to fill . The jigsaw pieces are falling in place , it's just not happening at the speed at which we want.

I don't think Mayo is doing a great job with the media, but it's also kind of a losing battle. The Boston sports media doesn't actually talk about the sports they cover. They just talk about front office/ownership power dynamics and if the team is being cheap. WTF is anyone supposed to do with that question? Other teams don't deal with that BS from the media. They don't fish for the new GM or head coach to trash the last guy. It's just the Boston media that wants to drum up that crap, because honestly the Belichick exit is an easier story to sell than the garbage team they have.

I get your point but I don’t think Mayo’s response has really generated all that much distraction. There are much bigger fish to fry given how bad this team sucks at the moment. His response is at the bottom of the pile tbh.

Hopefully we’ll give a winning performance next week against Jax. As bad as we are, that’s actually a winnable game.

Another thing:

If you think the roster is so bad (it is), then why are they signing so many of Bill’s players? Stop signing them.

Bill let a lot of players go when he first took over while Mayo/Wolf are rewarding them.

Owenu and Dugger had no business getting what they got. Barmore and Rham were unnecessary at the moment. Retaining Bourne so early was ridiculous.

He could have easily swatted it away a million ways and chose not to. Not a catch 22 at all and not difficult in the slightest.
