I am sure Mayo will backtrack on this in another 48 hours but it is pretty easy to read between the lines on this one. While agree he is mostly right I don't love the finger pointing and excuse making. Him and Wolf had the opportunity this offseason to fix the offensive line and they gambled on a guy who quit the team and some rookies.

I mean what is Mayo supposed to say to that specific of a question about the state of the team before he took over, its a loaded question meant to be taken negative no matter the answer Jerod gives

I agree, the choices are blame himself and the coaching, blame BB, blame Wolf or blame the players not executing. There is no benefit casting doubt on any of these parties, even if they all have a hand in the current situation. Mayo needs to recognize these dangerous questions and stop creating media driven controversy.

It is either his continued lack of media savviness or just being petty and taking the low road. Either way I don't love it. It also can easily come across as admitting the guys on the team aren't very good which is quite the message to send to the locker room. There were far better ways to answer that question.

Mayo is losing me and quick. He’s just a worse version of Robert Saleh.
There was a way to answer it, by not answering like Bill and focusing on the current team. Mayo fell into the media’s trap and has been finger pointing since day 1.

Well it's the Truth bad roster and paying Coordinators scraps was BB's mo.

Meh. WTH does anyone expect Mayo to answer to that? He hardly threw anyone under the bus. The guy got asked the equivalent of 'When did you stop beating your wife?' It's an ahole question designed to stir crap up and he sidestepped by putting it back on questioner. I'd say he handled it as well as could be expected.

Too many folks here just want to piss all over the guy. How about we at least give him a first class trial then follow it with a proper hanging?

The greatest coaches aren't chit without a great QB play in this league. You'd think everyone here would know that by now.

Well BB was the defacto gm for twenty years so of course his finger prints are all over this roster.

First off, extremely weird comment about hanging, and second there are a dozen ways to answer that better than he did. I have been branded anti-Bill by many on here and definitely wanted him to move on but Mayo seems to be over his skis in so many areas so finger pointing isn't a good look. Of course it was a loaded question designed to make people react but that is why having some clue how to deal with the media comes in handy.

"I believe in the guys in that locker room and feel like we can win games with them."

"This is obviously a team in transition and I will admit we need to add depth in some spots but overall I feel good about this group."

"We have a mix of some young guys looking to establish themselves and some leadership we were obviously intent on keeping this offseason. This group works hard and eventually the results will show it."

Three canned responses that would somewhat answer the question and wouldn't generate a soundbite. Really isn't that hard.

First off, extremely weird comment about hanging,
I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt that this wasn't meant maliciously.

The comment was a sarcastic paraphrasing of 'Judge Roy Bean' and copied in 'Silverado'
Meaning we're going to observe the trappings of a civilized trial but the outcome is foreordained.

Hey guys, remember when Bill took on a roster with overpaid players and no young prospects on the roster?

Did he blame Grier in 2000 when that roster was rough?

Both Bill and now Jerod knew exactly what they were getting themselves into - especially Jerod being there for 5 years. This is now the 2nd jab I've seen him take at Bill.

From another perspective one might say the 'jab' was built into the question rather than the answer. Just sayin'
