Starting Brissett is really a challenge to the rest of the offense to be better. This move sends a strong message to the rest of the offense that the rookie is not some sort of magic bean that will solve all of the problems by himself. When Brady was starting out the rest of the team made a commitment to go above and beyond to give the kid a chance to succeed. Let's hope the OL in particular has the same level of ownership to allow the most skilled QB to start.

What I think:

a.) I think I like how Mayo came out and said it was "HIS DECISION". Good for him to own up to it.

b.) Jacoby actually gives us the best chance at winning in week 1 @ Cincinnati. We are gonna have to play complementary football and let our defense win that game. While Brisset turned over the ball in pre-season, he still has the 2nd lowest turnover rate in the league amongst starting QB's with many games under their belt (second to only Aaron Rodgers). We gotta protect the ball...that is the #1 thing for our offense. I am OK with pounding it with Rham...and then punting it with Baringer.

c.) @CIN, SEA, @NYJ, and @SFO......tough start for us. I'd like to see the OL to AT LEAST get about 240+ more reps in a live game before we put Maye behind the line.

d.) All of that being said....it is still possible that we see Maye play....Jacoby could get dinged up...and we aren't putting Milton out there any time soon. There could be blowouts too...like when Brady played in Detroit as a rookie to mop up....

I figured that getting time in the 2nd halves of games would happen, but I hope it does not happen week 1

Well actually. Belichick had 1 career winning season to date. Weis had less experience than AVP. The OL had a rookie LT and a never will be RT, a stret FA RG and a center who had to move to G in the shotgun. Brown was in his 8th season and had had 1 year with over 41 receptions, pop Douglass had 49 as a rookie.

The issue has more to do with Cole Strange and his propensity to get injured.

I actually think he's a halfway decent guard. The issue I have is with his ongoing injury. He missed 7 games last year, and we can only hope he will miss less this year.

Maybe he bounces back. Guys do recover and play well afterwards.

Got burned by Wynn and his constant injuries. Just trying to avoid that scenario. If we are trying to rebuild, and we are trying to rebuild, might as well take advantage of opportunities that may present themselves unexpectedly.

He has been injured once. That’s not a propensity.

The OL is so bad it would not shock me one iota if by week three everyone but Milton is on season ending IR and they sign Zappe back off of the KC practice squad.

How do you define promising? I'd bet that those QB failures had more to do with them being poor to begin with than by being spooked, or whatever you call it. The history of the NYFL is also littered with promising QBs who started right away and became winners.

if a player gets drafted in the first round? Promising, If they are drafted at all, they are promising. If a player makes an NFL squad as a street free agent, then they have promise. If any of those guys are considered a potential starter, they are promising. Not all draft picks pan out, we all know that. If the greatest qb can come from the 6th round, then its hard to say that guys who get drafted aren't promising.

Andrew Luck is the example of what not to do. Most point to Carr, and rightly so because 76 sacks in one season is ridiculous. But Luck started in Indy, they knew how good he was, and despite all that promise, they never built around him. He got so beat up, he quit. There are other guys, who may not have had the highest ceiling who also got so battered, they never were able to fully develop or became so debilitated due to injury, it was game over. Drew Lock, Sam Bradford, Tim Couch, Baker Mayfield... well maybe not Baker... but I think you get the point... they come to mind right away...

not starting for a half season isn't going to negatively impact Drake Mayes development.
