The symptoms and severity of MCL injuries are evaluated on a scale of 1-3.

Grade 1 = your ligament remains intact with only a few fibers partially torn. Symptoms are minimal and you are able to bear weight with only mild pain.

Grade 2 = your ligament is still intact but a larger percentage of fibers are torn. Symptoms include more significant pain and swelling, as well as instability with cutting or pivoting movements.

Grade 3 = your tendon is completely torn. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, and bruising. Instability and stiffness are very common.

MCL Tear

Nobody from the Patriots has ever said he has a grade 3 MCL injury. That information comes from outside sources and is subject to a grain of salt (or billions).
