The one thing Hoyer gives us is experience in knowing our offense, and that alone gives him a leg up on any other backup not named Matt Cassel.

Otherwise, I agree with you that Hoyer wouldn’t make me feel too confident in a real game setting.

I am more confident with Hoyer than I ever was with Jacoby Brissett and his inability to throw accurate passes and his slow processing.

I can definitely get behind that statement, sure.

The real interesting question to me is how much of JGs development is on him vs. on the extended and intense coaching he got from McD and BB. There was a QuickSlants a while ago where Curran mentioned that the two were doing a lot of overtime with JG looking at game film, talking football and working on things. More than with previous backups because JG was really seen as a potential long term starter.

Now don't get me wrong I am not suggesting that JG is a product of BB and McD. If anything JB proves that you have to get a player that has the ability to actually execute on that coaching. As they say.. you can't polish a turd..

Id kick the tires
Hw could surprise

I don’t see a downside. Bring him in to camp with little in the way of expectations and see if he can beat out Hoyer or a draftee.

Just got a news alert on my phone that the patriots met with Manziel today at the Texas A&M pro day. Interesting.

New England would be a Interesting spot for him.
Learn behind Belichick Brady and Josh I'd be curious if the marriage could work.
However I bet more teams give him a strong chance to start sooner.

Isn’t Manziel very talented? Only 25...if he’s got serious potential why not kick the tires?

We all know Hoyer is one of the least talented QBs in the nfl with his noodle arm

No you don't kick the tires on him unless you have a QB issue. Unlike many other positions there are only so many QB snaps to be had in camp with about 70-80% going to Brady and the majority of the remaining ones to Hoyer. You dont waste those few snaps here and there on someone you already know everything about. Especially not at times when you might actually try to find a viable future QB and slowly built him up like they did with JG.

You don't waste a roster spot on someone like that in our situation. Any UDFA brought in is more intriguing than Manziel because those will actually get to do football stuff and not just carry equipment and be a camp arm.

That’s a really narrow POV

Ditto......he’s got some tools and you can get a couple of cheap years out of him if he’s got his priorities straight .... plus it will be real easy to smell if he doesn’t

But then again, I’d give Kaepernick a shot too if he prioritized correctly......hell, I’d consider supporting his causes if he didn’t make things harder for me

I think Kyed is ridiculing the "Lamar Jackson is a WR" hot take havers rather than suggesting Manziel should try to play wide receiver.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, Manziel is only 25 and came into the league with an elite arm, exceptional footwork, and unique athleticism. He was always going to be a project for coaches, a project made all the more difficult by his issues.

If those are truly in the past, and you have nothing to lose by trying to find out, then he's a perfect developmental candidate and he won't cost much either. I would have taken Manziel the year he came out over any quarterback in this draft except Rosen based purely on talent, and here you can get him for free.

So let me get this straight..

You are thinking about replacing the guy who has years of experience with EP in general and the Patriots playbook in particular, is a hard worker and has shown that he can be a competent QB with an entitled guy who has only recently beaten a severe drug addiction, has neither shown the ability to correctly read presnap or postsnap nor get through all progressions without starting to get funny feet and so far has been pretty much the anti-thesis of a hard worker.

I mean, yes, we all know that Hoyer can meltdown at points in the game but Manziel is essentially one gigantic meltdown.

But more importantly, there are only so many meaningful snaps to give out for QBs during camp. Adding Manziel to serve as camp body / QB3 essentially means we will not draft anyone in this position.

Sure, if you dont like the Allens and Laulettas of the draft and don't want the Patriots to get a QB with one of the picks, then this might be something you would consider. But if you want them to take a shot at any QB in the draft then there is no real space in terms of meaningful snaps for a fourth QB.

Forget Keapernick, he's NEVER gonnna get another chance. You dont sue the league and then get a second chance. He cost Kraft money, nope not gonna happend.

Allen's going to be long gone by the time the Patriots pick, and I wouldn't touch him in any case. The Laulettas of the world are extreme dart throws; most QBs after the first two rounds are career backups. I don't know, other than trading up for a falling Josh Rosen or staying put and hoping for Lamar Jackson to fall, both of which are longshots, I don't see the Patriots drafting a Brady replacement in this draft. Manziel has the theoretical ceiling to be that, at least.

Patriots fans have been spoiled by Brady. We want to think we can pluck a guy in the late rounds or off the far end of someone's bench (I saw Pat's Pulpit stumping for Cody Kessler, ugh) and have continuity of play. But that's just very unlikely. Like it or not, eventually the Patriots will need to expend another high pick on a quarterback. Someone like Manziel may provide a second path with very little risk.

I say get him, see if he can play. There’s little risk and at worse you get a backup that’s probably better than hoyer. Our dirt poor Garoppolo lol
