I get a little nervous when I see that, to be honest.
College players are being rated against other college players, obviously. If 1-40 are similar, does that trend to high end or mediocre? Is it a "good" draft for pro-level top-end?
So my scale goes something like this ...
9.5 - 9.9 1st RD - Elite/HOF Potential - Top 5-10 at their position - week to week game changers. Not many have earned this grade (Aaron Donald, Von Miller, JJ Watt, Odell, Mack, Myles Garrett)
8.5 - 9.4 1st RD - Impact Starter - Chance to be top 10-20 at his position - Top Tier players (Pat Peterson, Gilmore, Mike Evans, Lamar Jackson)
8 - 8.4 2nd RD - Future / Part-Time Starter - Contributes year one - potential to be top 25 / consistent NFL productivity (Jarvis Landry, Kyle Van Noy, Gabe Davis, Carlton Davis)
7 - 7.9 3rd RD - Impact Depth / Rotation - Chance to Start in right situation - Quality Special Teams (you get the idea and my grades are always available in the draft forum in most of the draft threads)
6.5 - 6.9 4th RD - Special Teams / Possible Rotation - Depth
6.0 - 6.4 5th RD - Take A Shot
5.5 - 5.9 6th RD Take A Shot
5.0 - 5.4 7th RD Take A Shot
I think we have about ten to twelve 8.5 - 9 types. Neal, Icky, Cross, Sauce, Johnson, Walker, KT, Booth, McDuffie, Linderbaum, Stingley, Dax, Davis, Zion. Maybe one or two more
Twenty five 8 - 8.4 and 7 - 7.9 types and then a decent drop off.
Similarly, I get a bit of an eye-roll over the Georgia defensive prospects. Wouldn't college front of Wyatt, Davis, and Trayvon Walker make Cine and Kendrick's jobs easier? To say nothing of Quay Walker, Dean and Tindall (and Nolan Smith, too, had he decided to enter the draft) at the second level?
I know there's a ton of talent there (almost literally with Davis, who I love for the Pats, but playing alongside 8 other potential top 100 picks is pretty good territory for a player looking to shine.
I'm thinking of a guy like Anfernee Jennings. Looked great in that loaded Alabama defense - will he even get on the field this year?
Yup but remember they're going to an all-star league in the NFL and will be playing alongside the best of the best on another level. I get what you're saying though. That's why it's important to block out competition, teammates etc and really study the individual. In some cases it matters, others not so much.
EDIT: Also, I think Curran is right and the Pats are going much more zone and smaller/faster at LB - McMillan is listed at 242, Wilson (who I loved coming out of college) at 233...throw in Pepper and Dugger, I was only (less than) half-kidding when I said they were creating a 4-7 defense.
BCG, will this change your PTP thinking on your board? Is a Chenal still more likely (type-wise) than a Lloyd?
Honestly I don't think so. I think we're bending and compromising a little. I definitely think Chenal is more likely than Lloyd for example. Just think we'll give a little but not going to an extreme just yet.
