Mankins deserves to be the highest paid OG in football because he is the best OG in football. They can easily afford it because the unit cost is low, especially if they don't re-sign Light and cut Kaczur as expected. Protecting Brady, especially from interior pressure is essential to their success and having Mankins at LG for the rest of Brady's career is the best move they can make to ensure that.

This will be one amazing line in a few years (If Mankins signs). Mankins and Cannon at guard, Vollmer and Solder at tackle. We might have a new center in the next few years. But add some solid blocking tight ends, and we should have a good running game, and always great passing game.
No one needs to be cut in order to afford a long-term agreement with Mankins. A deal will save at least $3M to $4M from the cap. See below for a $7.8M per year contract that gives Mankins $24M now and saves $4M to $6M compared to Mankins current 2011 cap hit of $10.M.
-------------------------------------
cap savings of $4M or $6M depending on bonus structure)
-----------------------------------------------------------
DEAL ONE ($7.78M per year; 2011 cap savings $4M)
5 years
$22M bonus
Salaries of $2.1M, $2.6M, $3.2M, $4M, $5M (25% a year increase
DEAL 2 ($8.14M per year; 2011 cap savings of $6M)
5 years
$24M bonus split evenly between 2011 and 2012
Salaries of $2.1M, $2.6M, $3.2M, $4M, $5M (25% a year increase)
----------------------------------------------------------
Obviously a bit more can be put in salary perhaps increasing 2011 salary with a decrease in bonus money; but you get the idea.
Cap savings of $4M of $6M seems doable.
If the 2011 bonus is reduced to $12M, with a $10M roster bonus in 2012, then the 2011 cap would be reduced by $6M. The bonus could be $12M and $12M, increaased the total deal to over $8M a year and giving us a $6M 2011 cap savings.

Guards have been getting a little more love with big money contracts in the last 5 years, but I still think you can get by with some lunch pail guys. Mankins is a special player, and it would be a luxury to have him, not a necessity, imo.we need Mankins to protect brady. give him a 5 yr deal Guards are so important and we have the BEST 1 Let us keep him here
Light and Mankins have been incredibly successful on the left side. It would be a major loss in 2011 to lose either of them.
This is where the action is. We will see where we are when we know who is staying, and for how long. Amazingly, if we sign both long-term, there may be no cap effect at all.
