Mankins Deal Finally Appears Closer to Becoming a Reality

hopefully this "fresh start" includes a long-term extension being hashed out over the next few weeks.

Mankins deserves to be the highest paid OG in football because he is the best OG in football. They can easily afford it because the unit cost is low, especially if they don't re-sign Light and cut Kaczur as expected. Protecting Brady, especially from interior pressure is essential to their success and having Mankins at LG for the rest of Brady's career is the best move they can make to ensure that.

This, this, and only this.

Without him, our O-Line is significantly weaker, even with Solder.

If the contract keeps his cap hit in the $6-7M range for the next 2 years, then escalates, that would be pretty great.

No one needs to be cut in order to afford a long-term agreement with Mankins. A deal will save at least $3M to $4M from the cap. See below for a $7.8M per year contract that gives Mankins $24M now and saves $4M to $6M compared to Mankins current 2011 cap hit of $10.M.
-------------------------------------
cap savings of $4M or $6M depending on bonus structure)
-----------------------------------------------------------
DEAL ONE ($7.78M per year; 2011 cap savings $4M)
5 years
$22M bonus
Salaries of $2.1M, $2.6M, $3.2M, $4M, $5M (25% a year increase

DEAL 2 ($8.14M per year; 2011 cap savings of $6M)
5 years
$24M bonus split evenly between 2011 and 2012
Salaries of $2.1M, $2.6M, $3.2M, $4M, $5M (25% a year increase)
----------------------------------------------------------
Obviously a bit more can be put in salary perhaps increasing 2011 salary with a decrease in bonus money; but you get the idea.

Cap savings of $4M of $6M seems doable.

If the 2011 bonus is reduced to $12M, with a $10M roster bonus in 2012, then the 2011 cap would be reduced by $6M. The bonus could be $12M and $12M, increaased the total deal to over $8M a year and giving us a $6M 2011 cap savings.

This will be one amazing line in a few years (If Mankins signs). Mankins and Cannon at guard, Vollmer and Solder at tackle. We might have a new center in the next few years. But add some solid blocking tight ends, and we should have a good running game, and always great passing game.

Gronk is a solid blocking TE.....Smith may be the other....only need to find a replacement for Koppen at Center.....

The Pats OL could be very very good by next year....

I think they trade him for sure now that he's signed the tag. Could be a #1 for him. That would be SWEET!:rocker:

That would be just lovely. With maybe one more cut (any of Kaczur, Sanders, or Crumpler would free up $3M or so), we could be looking at $10M+ to play with after rookies. Maybe we could see a signing. Still lots of good players left out there.

This is music to my ears! TFB will be getting some of the best protection with him blocking!:rocker:

so if Mankins signs long term, we will have a future OLine of:

Solder - Mankins - C - Cannon - Vollmer

that is a pretty good looking group of hogs if you ask me

Ian,

From your lips to God's ears. Solder and Tom both need Mankins back, but Ian, answer me something: how do you keep looking so young? Keep up the great work.

A little FYI.

Mankins will not be able to sign his tender until this Friday (when the new league year starts). Of course this may be supplanted by a new contract.

The same is true of BJGE.

Re: Mankins has signed franchise tender.

Excellent news. I hope a multi-year deal is imminent as well, and I also hope they can sign Light to a 2-year deal to provide leadership for Solder until he is able to hit his stride.

I was VERY happy to see us get Solder, but he still isn't ready to be Brady's shield just yet.

Re: Mankins has signed franchise tender.

we need Mankins to protect brady. give him a 5 yr deal Guards are so important and we have the BEST 1 Let us keep him here

Guards have been getting a little more love with big money contracts in the last 5 years, but I still think you can get by with some lunch pail guys. Mankins is a special player, and it would be a luxury to have him, not a necessity, imo.

Re: Mankins has signed franchise tender.

Light and Mankins have been incredibly successful on the left side. It would be a major loss in 2011 to lose either of them.

This is where the action is. We will see where we are when we know who is staying, and for how long. Amazingly, if we sign both long-term, there may be no cap effect at all.

Totally onboard with this.

I am usually ALL FOR the Patriots being shrewd with their money and making sure they do not overpay. Obviously, TFB would be a player you overpay for (if that number even exists - coming off an MVP season) and I think Mankins - though there WOULD be a ceiling, a number too ridiculous - is a good enough player that you just suck it up and spend the cash.

In 2010, the improvement upon his return was obvious to all. That speaks to me.

Ever since Steve Hutchinson's mega-contract with the Vikings sparked that run where guys like Derrick Dockery started getting big money, I've kinda felt like guards were maybe becoming a little overvalued. At the very least, I think it's safe to say that they're not undervalued anymore.
