The Rule

NFL rules state "no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." They also say all video for coaching purposes must be shot from locations "enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

The Admission

"What we do every away game is tape our team from both end zones, whenever it's possible. We always ask for permission to do that. Usually it's granted, provided there is a physical space to do that, it's to get the same angle you get in practice. Anybody that asks us to do it, we extend the same courtesy. It's pretty common, one way or the other, depending on how teams like to like at their game tape. That's really what it was." -- Eric Mangini

The Conclusion

It is against NFL rules to tape from any location that isn't "enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead." The Jets have admitted to taping in violation of that rule. The opposing team cannot give its consent to allow the opposing team to break this rule, any more than a fellow motorist at an intersection can give me consent to run a red light.

Next Steps

The League should seize and review all Jets tapes obtained in violation of the rules. The Jets should be penalized their 2nd and 3rd round draft choices next year and fined $250k. Mangini should be fined $500k. The tapes should be reviewed by Goodell to determine if they reveal that the Jets were in fact stealing signals, and released to ESPN as the Pats' tapes were.

Yes, I know there are other threads but I wanted to spell it out. And put a more accurate name on the topic.

Your post is excellent. You should forward it to some of the national media members.

Re: Mangini admits to illegal videotaping

Logic and reason are on your side....but that doesn't mean much these days.

My feelings exactly. Also, Mangini contends the Jets videotaping was "of their own team"; it would be really interesting if the league took a look at those tapes and found otherwise.

PS Seiglo, what is your source for the Mangini quote in your post?

They need to also get the names of every team that's "asked permission" of the Jets to tape as well, and to fine each and every team that's done this a first/second round pick (playoff dependent) and $750k.

The horse is out of the barn, let's not have the NFL trying to shut the door now.

Re: Mangini admits to illegal videotaping

I think what you people are forgetting to see is that there is a difference. Ill try and expalin it to you pee brain pat fans.

The jets did not have a camera on the side lines filming the pats coaches signals.

THE PATS DID!

Where does that rule reference filming coaches? I must have missed that. Let me paste the rule and check.

The Rule

NFL rules state "no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." They also say all video for coaching purposes must be shot from locations "enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

Still can't see it, want to point that part out to me?

Re: Mangini admits to illegal videotaping

WHat does it matter "pee brain" they were gathering the same data! Who cares where the dumb camera was!

THE PATS DID!

Teams use game footage to review the game and learn defense and offense game planning. Theres no difference from getting pictures taken from the coaches box and having them faxed down to the players on the side lines.

You can take that article for what its worth but the jets did not do what the pats tried doing. AND THATS CHEATING

The rule does not prohibit filming "Signals" pea brain, it prohibits video taping of any kind from anywhere but an enclosed area.
Capiche?

Re: Mangini admits to illegal videotaping

I did not know that teams regularly film from the end zones, apart from any official league cameras. This just further highlights how stupid the whole firestorm and penalty of Spygate was, because a team could simply train those cameras on the opposing coaches for the entire game and accomplish the same result as what we did.

Actually, according to the rules, the data is irrelevant.

The could have been filming the cheerleaders. Or for Mangini, the ball boys.

Doesn't matter. They broke the NFL rule by putting the camera where they did and filming.

Numnuts, Did you even read the first post? How about this part."NFL rules state "no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." They also say all video for coaching purposes must be shot from locations "enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead." The light house is an open PUBLIC PLACE! >>NOTICE ROOF OVERHEAD!<< The kettle calling the pot black. Thats why you have such a loser team.

I agree, seriously, send it to Easterbrook. If we've learned one thing about that nutjob, it's that he loves conspiracy of any kind, Patriot related or not.

Nice to see you don't even understand what it is the Pats got pinched for.

"But the Jets didn't do it from the sideline!!!" is irrelevant. They admitted to taping from a location that violates the same rule that the Pats got penalized for.

This ain't hard.

Re: Mangini admits to illegal videotaping

Awesome ... thanks! You're correct - they certainly broke the letter of the law (if the rule we were sanctioned for breaking was in place at that time).

To me, the next big question is, did they violate the spirit of the law? In other words, is Mangini telling the truth by claming they only taped their own team? Because if that is true, people will still argue that what we did was cheating and what they did was not, because we taped the opposing coaches signals. Stay tuned ...

Re: Mangini admits to illegal videotaping

Hey pee brain it doesnt matter where the camera was placed it matters what they we're filming. YOU JUST DONT GET IT!

As a matter of fact (literal fact, not a figure of speech) what they were filming was irrelevant. Where they were filming from was.

Keep trying, though.

Oh, and they did edit out all the Patriots players correct?

By the way the expression is "pea brain", not "pee brain", pea brain. Although certainly both forms might apply to you.
