Patriots Player Departure Mac Jones traded to Jags for a 6th

Mac is just another first round QB that did not make the transition to the NFL not a mistake on the level of Zack Wilson. He was a reasonable pick at the time. Cutting bait after three seasons of poor results is also reasonable. The real mistake was placing too much blame on MP and not cutting him after season 2. I hope the team is willing to risk a similar outcome if their player is on the board at draft time.
15th pick, not like this was a top 5 pick.

People need to learn the difference between a bad decision and a bad result. Two different things. Picking Mac Jones at 15 was a solid decision. We had no QB on the roster, and there were no other QB's after Mac that were any more successful.

After 3 years it was determined to be a bad result. A lot of solid decisions don't work out, nobody to blame over it. NKeal Harry was a bad decision cause of all the top WR's picked after him, but not Mac Jones.

It was clear that the divorce was coming. Even if he can rehab himself and become a starter again, it was clear it wasn't going to be with the Pats. Way too much baggage.

I think going to the Jags a good landing spot for him. He has little chance of starting unless Lawrence gets injured or his second half slide last year gets worse this year. Lawrence was really not very good for much of last year especially in the second half of the season.

But I think sitting for a year can rehab his image and potentially have a shot to compete for a starting job in 2025. It worked for Mitch Trubisky when he went to Buffalo. He spent a year in Buffalo as Allen's back up and then became the starter in Pittsburgh the following year. Trubisky just showed he sucked when he was given another starting shot as QB #1. Maybe Jones will fare better. Maybe not.

But as for Jones' failure here. It can be that he failed as a starter and Belichick set him up for failure (even if it wasn't his intention). These things are not mutually exclusive and both can be true. I think a lot of things played a big role in the disaster of the offense and the play of the starting QB of the last two years and both Jones and Belichick deserve a share of the blame.

So basically… the Pats flipped 1 year of Mac Jones to the Jags for Nathan Rourke and a 6th rounder. Not a bad trade actually…

Grier was not the GM in 2000 he was kept on to help with the draft because he was part of the scouting during the previous college season.
Grier was VP of Player Personnel until after the 2000 draft. Grier and Rehbein performed extensive scouting on Brady. Grier was the only NFL executive to call Michigan HC about Brady.

Use your same logic for the Mac pick. Who called in the pick? Who called Brady to tell him he was drafted? Game over. You lose again.

Bill gets credit for the Brady pick. I'm not saying he doesn't. He's just not the guy that was key to making it happen.

This is a good question. What are all you that ran out to buy a Mac jersey doing with yours? @Ian?

The other guys were just doing leg work for Bill they gave Bill info on Brady and 100s of other players it was Bill who took that info and decided in the 6th Rd there was no choice better to make than Tom. Greatest draft selection ever made absolutely brilliant.

He was running college and pro personnel for Bill.

Kraft him self said Bill didn't gain full control until AFTER the third Superbowl. He said that as recently as 3 weeks ago on The Dynasty.

So, again, who was making the decisions?

They want to believe that Bill was a god.

People most responsible for Brady being drafted:
1. Rehbein
2. Grier
3. Pioli
4. Weiss / Belichick

I'm not anti Bill and certainly am willing to give him his credit but to lay it down to laymen terms that HE picked Brady and KRAFT picked Mac is hilarious.

The embarrassing part is my take was accused to be biased.

Anyway, this is a sneaky trade for the Jaguars. Lawrence has not put together a fully great season, and they haven't extended Lawrence yet.

This could mean something, just saying.

whatever it means, it certainly doesn't mean what you're implying it does.

Mac Jones smacking the nuts of opposing defenders and raising his cleats when he slid was a stain on the entire Patriot organization.

Mac sucking and reports coming out now that BB never wanted him in the first place and that Kraft wouldn’t let Bill trade him last offseason only makes BB’s exit make more sense.

Mac had a great offensive line, a genius coordinator and good weapons his rookie year… he finished 1-4 and turned the ball over eight times in five games.

Mac truthers are delusional…

That is a gross misrepresentation of what the story was. The story was that Belichick felt that the Pats could draft Davis Mills in the third and make him a starter who could be the franchise QB, but deferred to his scouting that drafting Mac Jones at 15 was a much better option to be a contender again. The story never was he was against drafting Mac Jones. It was basically he felt both guys could be starters, but there wasn't enough of a difference between the two and drafting Mills in the third was a better value.

BTW, Belichick was wrong about Mills. And I think his thinking of why he wanted Mills over Jones was flawed.

But either way, not one report said he didn't want Mac Jones. If he felt Jones couldn't play, he wouldn't have drafted him. Plain and simple. If Kraft let Belichick put Patricia and Judge in charge of the offense a year later, he would have let Belichick pass on Jones in favor of Mills.

So you think Pioli was running things the first few years? Then what did he do wrong to get demoted in favor of Bill after 3 SBs. I think you're misquoting something Kraft said.

Go read Patriot Reign.

I am not misquoting. Bill picked Brady. So did about 5 other guys.

Bill also picked Mac. As did a couple other guys Kraft hired that season to help him with his horrendous drafting.

Its not ALL Bill ALL the time. It never was.

? Great offensive line….no
While I initially scoffed, to Wozzy's defense, Mac's Sack% was 10th best in the league that year, and the Pats were 8th in rushing (11th in YPC). If I were to do a low blow to what Mac'd done, I'd question what his real Sac percentage was.

Lol, the last (and only) jersey I bought was Drew Bledsoe’s way back when, and it’s still hanging in my closet

Not all the time but for 23 years and 6 Superbowl wins it was.
