Mac Ahead of Where Manning Was His Rookie Year

Brady arm strength has been mile better than Mac even in his rookie year.

From what I see right now when Mac has to throw for more than 10 yards, he has to read the coverage quickly and perfectly and throw the ball on time with anticipation. If he is late in his read, I don’t think he has the arm strength to get the ball in a tighter window on a late throw as of right now.
This is what I am concerned about. Mac's quarterbacking is promising, but his arm strength seems shot. Some of those throws I saw in the Houston game were troubling.

With all this talk about the Patriots being unwilling to throw deep since Mac took over, I decided to compare the “Intended Air Yards per passing attempt” advanced stat for all the seasons it appears to be available on pro-football-reference:

2021 (current): 7.6 (#21)
2020: 6.8 (#28)
2019: 7.5 (#26)
2018: 7.8 (#17)

This seems to indicate that it’s not really a Mac related issue, but more a symptom of the scheme in recent years. Not great that they haven’t been able to fix the issue in 4 years and counting.

Interesting stat just posted by Mike Giardi on Jones' targets:

player or scheme? any idea?
Scheme (I think). I'm not an expert by any means, but they have at most 2 WRs on most plays and generally at least one tight end from what I've seen while logging the snaps. A fair amount of the throws from Mac appear to be going to whoever is lining up inside vs outside, which Giardi's Tweet confirms. I've got something coming that will make this a little easier for people to see, I just haven't finished it yet. What I'm doing is obviously going to be focused on just the Patriots offense, but I'm hoping it will allow us to pick up on trends, etc. and make a little more sense of it.

It also went further than 70 yards when you calculate the diagonal angle in which brady threw the ball. Since I brought that up, the poster who said “67 yards” has disappeared into the weeds
The pass attempt went into the books as 67 yards, they don't count diagonal yards in the stat books.

I also have better things to do than spend my day remembering I have a debate with simple minded people on a forum

I just dug these numbers out:

Again, not saying he's Manning by any means, this is obviously just a reminder to those who seem to be dismissing him that even the great ones took time to come into their own. I didn't do the Brady comparison because as we know, that's been discussed enough. But seeing these totals, while we don't know what type of player he'll eventually be, Jones is obviously off to a pretty good start.

Not sure how you can compare Manning to Jones? Manning never won a National Championship, and Jones is clearly the better pro. Drop mic, case closed.

LOL, that's quite a bold statement. I like it

Every NFL QB can throw it like 60+ yards. Mac was considered something of a deep ball specialist in college.
