Lombardi's Thoughts on Malcolm Butler

Malcom Bultler's First Round Tender

Am I the only one worried about his First Round 3.9Mill tender?? Anybody think it is far fetched for a Team to pull the trigger?? That would definitely weaken our Patriots.

Also the Team that pulls the trigger will be getting a Starter from Day 1 and not a Rookie crap-shoot stuff, Butler is just going into his prime. I think this bears watching I wish we would just lock him up he's kept his mouth shut worked the man deserves to get paid.

Nah. No matter what, we will have the option to cover whatever someone offers. If we had little cap space, then maybe, but I doubt anyone will make an offer we will not cover

Ok so that's how it works.

I can't imagine some team offering so much that it won't be worth it to the Patriots to match the offer. After giving up a #1 pick, it will be a good deal for the Pats.

There are three options for 2017 (let's not worry about 2018 just yet):
  • The Pats sign him to a long-term deal.
  • He plays out the year on the tender.
  • The Pats get an extra first-round draft pick.
None of those are terrible as far as NE is concerned, though (2) would suck for Butler.

My worry is that Bill takes no days off.
Or that someone other than BB trademarked "VIII Rings"

I'm a bit worried. I do think a team will think Butler is worth the 1st round pick. While the Patriots can match, all it takes is a "poison pill" type contract like the Patriots gave Hogan last year that is difficult to match. I think it's unlikely Butler leaves but it's rare someone that good makes it to RFA so he could definitely sign an offer sheet.

It was a poison pill because BUF was tight against the cap. The Patriots aren't. The cost of a contract the Pats wouldn't match would be very high. (Remember the original "4 games in Foxboro"-type poison pill can't be used anymore.)

It does not concern me AT ALL. Do you really think someone will pay Butler what he wants to make (he has to agree to the offer sheet another team makes) AND give us a first round pick? If they lowball the offer Butler wont sign it and if he did sign it then we could match and get a good deal on him. Not worried one bit.

I'm not necessarily worried, but I would like to see him extended. He's more than earned the salary and the respect.

Its tricky though, because teams will want to low ball the offer because its the offer plus a pick, but the Patriots would be less likely to match than they would for a UFA like HT or Ryan, because by not matching they earn a 1st round pick.

I don't think I am worried. Giving up a 1st rounder and making an offer that the Pats will not match seems highly unlikely- especially for a team that is picking in the top 15 or so of the draft....but you never know. Teams lose their sensibilities and financial discipline this time of year.

My only fear is BB falling in love with accumulating draft picks thinking he can do better than Malcolm and/or letting him walk because he doesn't want to pay top 15 highest paid CB money and would rather pay top 15-32 CB money.

Malcolm may not be Patrick Peterson or Sherman but he is a top 10 CB and paying him as such is justified. I hope BB sees it the same way. That is my concern.

Well MB is the most important player on defense imo. If they lose him the Pats will suffer in the secondary for awhile. He has to be there #1 priority then HT.

Has NE even officially put a tender on Butler?
