1998 was hard to watch (like Edwards but loved Martin). Maybe more of an annoying season since the Jets hype was off the charts. 2009 also wasn't a lot of fun for me. Oddly enough I thought 2008 was fun to watch even with no playoffs and same with 2020.
Yeah maybe I was thinking of 99 not 98.
It was 1999. The Robert Edwards injury really messed things up. Kevin Faulk drafted in the 2nd round and the signing to Terry Allen's corpse was a disaster. Letting Willie Clay go and appointing Chris Carter to succeed him was an awful decision. The secondary got beat over the top all year. Ted Johnson was also injured and Law got injured later in the season. Vinatieri missed multiple game winning kicks. Losing to Damon Huard and the Dolphins at home up 14. Getting embarrassed a Ray Lucas led Jets team on MNF in Foxboro. That season was really frustrating.

1999 was one of the worst experiences. Just totally rudderless.

1987 is probably the bottom. You have a QB controversy, players getting into knifefights with loved ones, other players are found wrecked on the streets of Boston after cocaine binges, just an all around disaster start to finish.

As far as the knifefights, Jaqui stabbed Irving right before the Super Bowl.

The Victor Kiam/Sam Jankovich debacle was the closest I personally came to bailing on the Pats entirely. I gave up my season tickets when that flaming ahole fraud bought them, it took me about 10 years waiting to get new ones after The Scatback bought the team, my seats suck now compared to what I had in Schaefer/Sullivan/Foxboro Stadium. The only thing that kept me from turning my back on them was my feeling of loyalty to New England. At the time I figured they would be moved so I didn’t want to be the disloyal one in the equation. Plus they’re kind of in my bloodstream and were even at that point.

I was a bit too young for the years preceding Plunkett, and really other than that Kiam period between Berry and Parcells there haven’t been too many years since Fairbanks arrived where the team has been as bad as they’ve been these past couple years.

Since 2000 the 3 (1 is a sort of cheat) that stand out are:

2009 Patriots
2019 Patriots Weeks 9-Wild Card Round
2023 Patriots

That 2019 team in that stretch I mentioned was painful to watch.
The 2019 team was miserable.

Yup that 2009 team. Too much *****ing in the locker room that year. For some reason there wasn't the buy in needed. That was the year the Bill said he couldn't get them to play the way they needed too to Brady after the 4th and 2 thing.
Frustrations with that team are through the dynasty looking glass. Even with those issues, that team was much better than the real thin years. The truth about the players came out afterwards so there was still optimism when watching.

2020-2024 have been really difficult to even watch the Pats, but Maye is helping them stay on life support.

Of the Tom/Bill years, I didn't like the 2000, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2019 teams. 2018 was pretty boring until the playoffs rolled around where they turned it up.
2018 ? Love that team.

(Will def agree on 2000 & 2009 - the latter, vs Saints, oof)

99 & 2000 were pretty bad.
2005 was sad because you could tell the run was ending
2020 was THE worst - it was all over.

I despised last year's team so that's an easy #1. Just unwatchable.

2024 would have been up there but with Maye's emergence I look forward to watching them.

2002 was tough but seeing the emergence of Brady was awesome especially that comeback against Chicago.

1995: Offense couldn’t score. No Wrs.
2002: couldn’t stop the run
2009: no heart

2020: Like watching paint dry
2021: most overrated playoff team of the century
2022: Historically terrible offense
2023: The worst team I have seen since early 90s patriots.

2009 after Brady came back from injury. Things just went off the rails for whatever reason. I thought we would win the SB that year.

2015:

Bryce Harper. A fan favorite here..single handily cost us home field advantage with a fumble. I absolutely loathe him.

We would have killed Cam Newton in the superbowl

thomas 07-09... 07 wasn't exactly unenjoyable... least for the first 18 weeks...
springs - 2009
We did get to enjoy A Thomas use Jets RB Washington as a human projectile, smashing him into Brett Favre. Looked like something out of the Avengers.

2023 was heinous. Watching that offense was seriously difficult.

2011 defense was borderline unbearable. Peak "bend don't break."

They still ended with 13-3, though. So, it kinda worked.

Dan Orlovsky had a career game against that defense. lol

I put together this sheet for that season. Man some of the QB's that had big passing numbers against this defense. Romo, Rivers and Ben with AB in his prime I can sort of understand and Fitz to a lesser degree but Orlovsky, Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Chad Henne, Matt Moore... just lol. Gave up 400+ yards of offense in 9 out of 16 games and 350+ in 14 out of 16. Yikes.
Although we see here that defense at least was very good at getting turnovers and that helped. Unfortunately this year's defense isn't.
