6'4" 300 ain't no DE on this team.

I think it's because of the cap explosion and the fact that this market is very different than it was when most teams were up against the cap. In that market the Patriots would let other teams blow their extra cash and then move in and get the mid tier players who were left when other teams no longer had the space to sign them. In this market they have to be aggressive because most teams still have plenty of money to sign players and the first to get to them wins.

Still waiting on Hightower though, that's the really big one.

I do recall making a thread saying this is the year to spend and do a lot of long term contracts cause the cap will reliably be going up over the next 3-4 years.

I think the Pats factored that in and that is why they are being so aggressive now. My other guess is they will not be nearly as active in the next few years and go back to their usually very value based approach.

I'm not so sure on this end. IIRC weren't the Ratbirds forced to spend their DL money on Williams and Jernigan, and there simply wasn't enough there to give Guy the raise he earned. And then we swoop in with an offer they can't match because we STILL have so damned much cap space.

BTW- still have a big need for a speed edge guy and over 30MM to spend. who is out there left in FA who fits that discription. Who will be there in draft when we finally pick who can be developed OR (and you can tease me) who might be therer when we pick at #12.

This smells exactly like the Fanene signing. Who knows what would have happened if not for his injury ordeal...either way, hope this works better than that.

Would much rather have had Odrick but I guess they felt like Guy was the better value...

Rob Ninkovich?

I personally feel (sadly) weather Nink is on or off this team he is an after thought at this point. I just don't think he has much left in the tank. I like the player but he is on his last legs. Either this year or last year were his last as a Patriots and I would guess it is 50/50.

The Pats can save 1-1.4M if they cut him (I am not sure). He is still fairly cheap at 2.4M for this year so not a big deal to keep or cut either way.

One last steady year please Rob.

Did Patriots overpay? 4/20M. His pay last season was roughly 1.25M.
