WalterFootball.com: 2017 NFL Free Agents - Defensive Tackles

Sounds like a typical Patriot. Will help us run more 3-4 looks.

Dreaded PFF has him as a top 25 interior defender vs. the run

@manxman2601 is this guy the FA version of Deatrich Wise Jr.?

Good point.
Draft Board was just discussing DL/DE options in draft after #72 became highest Pats draft pick yesterday . and it seemed all good ones might be gone . since after Combine they are climbing on boards.

BB answered and drafted again in FA.
Now Wise could be a perfect project in lower rounds.

Can someone tell me why this guy lol is any good? Dont know much about him but 7th round pick that had one good year statistically, doessnt get me excited for 4/20.

He's solid in the 3-4 and has moved around in a 4-3 with the Ravens. Good tackler.

Malcolm Brown, Alan Branch, Larence Guy is an athletic, excellent 3-4 front.

Gotta get Hightower back in the fold.

You sure about that Robert?

98% :p

Pats rotate 8-9 guys along the DL.

In 2015 they had 5 inside guys in Branch, Brown, Hicks, Seal and Easley.

Last year they had 3 fatties but moved various DE/Edge guys inside like Sheard, Long and Flowers.

Branch played a ton last year. I bet they try to reduce his snaps a little.

I see Guy 3-4 DE, 4-3 DT in sub pkgs w Flowers and depending on the opponants playing 25-40 snaps a game.

A little expensive for a run stuffer. If they went this route would have liked to look at Poe or Hankins.

The farther you move Poe away from 0-tech the crappier he gets. Granted his play at 0-tech is pretty good. But I'd rather have versatile guys like Branch or Guy who can do multiple things (kick inside or play 3-tech, 5-tech). Especially at the money that Poe thinks he will get.

THEN the question becomes.....what do we spend it on. I'd be on the phone to Mangold right now. Christ if we carry it over to next year, we'll almost have enough to francise Butler AND Garapolo. ;)

i may be wrong but i thought you could only tag 1 player per year.

He has 2 blocked kicks over the last 2 years, 4 in his career. Some special team value.
Since they want to get rid of the hurdle rule BB needs to find other ways of blocking kicks

What is going on.

I don't remember the pats ever being this active. Maybe 07.

Probably because Caserio has watched every play he has ever been in and believes he's going to fill a significant role for them the next few seasons. People can complain about no names and "busts" the Patriots acquire but their Pro Scouting has been exceptionally good since Caserio has been running that department. I basically trust any moves he makes implicitly.

we don't have any picks early in the draft so bill has to be aggressive in FA

This is how you get BBs attention..

BTW - thanks for the link Nashua. This kind of statistics I can live with..
__

“The criteria to measure pass rush from these interior lineman was their average yards away from the quarterback at the time of their pass attempt or sack. Surprisingly Lawrence Guy was listed as the eight most disruptive interior lineman in the NFL in 2016.

Lawrence Guy’s official stat line for 2016 was 28 total tackles, five tackles for a loss, nine quarterback hits, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was also rated as one of the better run stuffing defensive ends in the NFL according to PFF.“

Bottom line everyone has him graded as a very good run defender. One of the best guys in the NFL as part of a rotation.

There are disagreements on how good his pass rush ability is from various sites. Usually when that happens somewhere in the middle is true so I will go exactly there and say he is an okay pass rusher (not good not bad) but very good run defender.

Good signing and I am sure he will find a role. I don't mind the 4 year 20M contract cause I am sure it is not going to be that High. He will probably make 12M over 3 years or something like that then will be curt or re-upped.

I think it's because of the cap explosion and the fact that this market is very different than it was when most teams were up against the cap. In that market the Patriots would let other teams blow their extra cash and then move in and get the mid tier players who were left when other teams no longer had the space to sign them. In this market they have to be aggressive because most teams still have plenty of money to sign players and the first to get to them wins.

Still waiting on Hightower though, that's the really big one.
