last pass to Diggs

If that had been a designed run, wouldn't there have been illegal linemen blocking downfield when that pass was thrown?
You realize you’re talking about Mike Onwenu, don’t you? And Grandpa Moses? They are not the “blocking downfield” type

I’m not sure I agree with that. If Maye is indeed “the guy” then you need to let him be the guy when you need him.
If that happens in the third and he fumbles, no one is on here today saying let him be who he is. It’s all contingent on him knowing when he can do that hero ball stuff and when you have to be safer with the football.

It was busted rather quick as we all saw. Rhamondre failed to block the open rusher.

I watched that play several times trying to figure out the blocking. Campbell and Wilson may have been moving right for a roll out pass, but everything was so muddy, you couldn’t really tell.
JT on QB School has a lot of discussion trying to figure it out. Time about 17:30.

Wow, thanks for sharing. This was fascinating. Would love to be a fly on the wall when Josh and Drake review this film. IF JT's analysis is correct and as a previous poster pointed out, Bradberry is supposed to pick up the DT to his left but that DT is so wide that it becomes really problematic for this to happen. In this instance, Maye makes an amazing recovery but it's probably a play he needs to audible and get them into something else.

Only a handful of other nfl QBs can make that throw. One we’ll see Sunday. Spencer Rattler.
Bailey Zapper says hello.

I re-watched that incredible play by Maye on their last possession and a few comments:

1. I would love to know what happened with the blocking on that one because it looked like a disaster from the start. Campbell and Wilson pulled at the snap but the rest of the line pretty much blocked straight on which left the DT with a free run at Maye.

2. Curran was complaining to Perry that this was a dumb play by Maye and that he shouldn't have even tried making that pass to Diggs. If Maye takes a sack or throws it away, the Patriots are likely punting in a few plays. If this play occurs in the 2nd qtr, I'm agreeing with Curran....live another day. But in this instance, this is likely the game and I'm glad Maye relied on his instincts and made an amazing athletic play.

Curran's assessment was stupid. He kept emphasizing that Maye was looking down after being grabbed but Drake didn't just blindly fling it -- he knew exactly where Diggs was the whole time.

Thanks. I’ve found a lot of JT’s analyses really interesting.

You make a good point about Drake needing to audible into something else, or maybe at least change the blocking, but I’m wondering if it was a called run for him as the ball carrier he might’ve been looking at it differently. Like looking for his running path and potential defenders in his path not the backside rush. Or even just not as inclined to audible out of his own run.

I almost choked on my tea this morning when I read that. This is a joke State, right?

He hit him in the hands with the pass, and he saw Diggs broke off whatever route he was running.

At some point, Mr. Curran's going to have to admit he's wrong, and get over the fact that his mole inside the organization was fired at the end of last season. That day's not today, but hopefully soon.

Yeah, his buddy shtick with Mayo came to an abrupt end. Curran used to be a good beat guy but has morphed into more of an "entertainer" these days.

That play is the beginning of a counter bash option and the failure was in the protection call. JT is right to be confused because Bradbury was never going to be able to reach Rousseau (I assume that is him because I can't see the uni #) in time for the trap block. This play failed before it even started. And asking Maye to recognize this sort of red flag, i.e., putting the onus on him to audible out, is asking too much of him at this point in his career.

You don't try to get too cute on protection calls against an elite DL, especially with a 2nd year QB.

People still listen/care about Curran?

No linemen were downfield.

Assuming its too early in his career to switch out of the play or adjust protection, I would bet after their film review and going forward, it's no longer too early in his career

It's not too early for him- he's already started learning but he is still at the stage where he's trying to drink from a fire hydrant.

He will understand what happened, learn from it, then make this exact same mistake again. It's just part of the game. It takes at least 3-5 years for an NFL QB to reach peak football IQ. As they say, there is just no substitute for actual game reps.

As quickly as he is learning it won’t be for long.

Yes, and considering how good he is now and how quickly he’s learning that makes how good he’ll be by the end of his rookie contract a bit scary.

They need to extend him as early as possible. Five years for a blank check seems like a fair price.
Wait so he's going to get better!

Three more years on his rookie contract is way more than four hours, so you’ll need to seek medical assistance….

I don’t think the answer is audible into else based on one DT positioning;….

I think play design didn’t account for it (McD fault)

& Remondre should have been told in such a case to chip the DT and delay him long enough for the C to get to his spot.
