Last Offensive Play of the Game (w/ similar play from another season)

According to Rule 4(8)(2)(g) in the 2019 rulebook:
If a safety results from a foul during the last play of a half, the score counts. A safety kick is made if requested by the receivers.

However, if a half-ending safety isn't the result of a penalty there is no kick.

So perhaps in the 2014 situation against Oakland they could have had someone run back to the endzone, do a little dance, and then jump out of the endzone when pressure came near.

NFL totally botched that clock, they wanted to see another Miami Miracle play out... absolutely absurd that they only ran 4 seconds off the clock on that play

Put Matt Slater or Devin McCourty in there next time, shotgun them the ball, have them turn and just run as fast as they can to the endzone for a safety, or slide if they see the clock on scoreboard hit 0. Cut any offensive lineman dumb enough to get a holding penalty

No one on defense would be fast enough to catch them with a 10-15 yard head start

I think the Patriots generally benefitted from the official incompetence.
They had a couple drives killed with spurious penalties, but the phantom kicking calls were enormous and the dropped-catch overturn was huge as well. Calling the fourth down dead while the ball was in the air was a very minor issue - given field position. And as others noted, it was a rare self-inflicted situation.

I agree. It’s a ridiculous idea and I kind of would like to see it sometime. Maybe in a meaningless week 17 game.
Didn't one of the 3 stooges run to the wrong endzone once?

Right, I think officiating is for another thread........I would be irate if we got called for those kicking calls. The incomplete fourth down catch though, I thought that was a pretty clear cut incompletion.

The Patriots last play took well over 5 seconds. You can easily see this by watching the play, the clock countdown and the ball actually touch the person out of bounds in real-time speed. The Patriots can’t be responsible for an inept timekeeper.

By the way, on the previous play, the timekeeper kept the clock running well after the five second mark had been reached even after the 40 second clock had run down and the Patriots had called a timeout. The clock wasn’t stopped until there were two seconds left on it. It had to be reset to five seconds.

Such is life in Foxboro.
