Would Patriots consider trading Tom Brady? - Peter King - SI.com

Two 6-4 teams with great stories and November desperation. I believe this is a playoff game for Miami. If the Dolphins win, they're 7-4, with the NFL's softest schedule over the next month -- St. Louis, Buffalo, San Francisco and Kansas City are a combined 11-29 -- on the horizon. A Miami win Sunday means they'd be a heavy favorite to be, at worst, an AFC wildcard team.

"It's going to be a playoff atmosphere around here for this game,'' rookie head coach Tony Sparano said from south Florida. "After this [Oakland] win, I patted the players on the back and said, 'Men, it's time to go to work.' ''
It is happening. Imagine a Thanksgiving in south Florida and the Dolphins tied for the AFC East lead, a game ahead of the almighty Patriots. A win at home Sunday and a Jets' loss at Tennessee, and it's real.
reading lines like this just makes me anxious what might happen this sunday..

Re: King : On fins game and brady

Doesn't make me anxious. More like curious. I think this Patriots team can be a viable playoff team but if they can't win this game I'm wrong. The Dolphins aren't that good. A pat on the back and a speech doesn't change that.

I'm curious - are the Patriots contenders or pretenders ?

Re: King : On fins game and brady

This game sunday IS the season.......no two ways about it. The Patriots would need a total collapse of the Dolphins and Jets to get in if they blow sundays game.

Re: King : On fins game and brady

For some time now, I have doubted King's place among the media as a serious, thoughtful individual. I now have no doubts: he should be working for the National Enquirer. For him to respond at all to the question about Brady posed to him, is enough for me to be sure he's all glitter. For him to respond the way he did, convinces me that he's not a serious NFL reporter.

I question if the Patriots are a playoff team even if they do win this game. Playoff teams are supposed to beat a lesser opponent at home, and the Patriots could not do that against Miami in September. Playoff teams are supposed to pull out close games in the 4th quarter and overtime, and the Patriots were not able to do that against Indy or the Jets.

This game on Sunday is HUGE. It has big time playoff ramifications. We had BETTER WIN. We need this game, IMO.

...and I am so sick and tired of reading crap like that about Brady. When did he become so USELESS around here?

I agree, that's why I said "can be" not "are". They need to quit making stupid mistakes and do better on 3rd down. Maybe this team just can't do it, if so they'll likely lose this week and we'll know. With Brady gone the margin for error might be too tight to have so many young defensive players and marginal talents in the secondary.

Regarding Brady, I have no doubt he'll be back. I imagine Belichick and Pioli would briefly consider whether they'd be better off with Cassel + a mega haul for Brady vs. Brady and a small, if any, haul for Cassel. I have a feeling the Tommy side would win that discussion - and fairly quickly.

Brady is apparently worth 2 #1 picks and Barrett Ruud, according to King.

Laughable.

Biggest regular season game the Patriots have played in at least two years and maybe 3.

The reason to win this week isn't about the playoffs, it's about correcting the mistakes, improving the execution, and playing 60+ minutes each game. Fans and pundits can bite their fingernails and spank their monkeys over the drama, but the team's mindset needs to be focused professionalism. There are 61 players (assuming the Practice Squad gets filled up again) who need to be practicing hard, rehabbing well, and focusing in on giving the chosen 45 active players the best tools and preparation possible to play and win on Sunday.

What kind of reality distortion field has King fallen into? Trade Tom Brady? The idea is is not even worthy of discussion. The simple answer is NO!

Yes, Brady has just had major knee surgery. But he's a pocket quarterback, not a running back. And he's one of the best pocket quarterbacks who has EVER played the game. A first ballot HOFer.

First his "coverage" of spygate and now this. I also used to think King was an authority on pro football. Now I think the guy is buzzing gadfly with lots of connections but without an ounce of intelligence.

Let's send him to cover NFL Antarctica.

Peter King has become such a moron on this Matt Cassel issue. At first I was glad we had some national support behind our guy, but the support behind MC is quickly turning into an increasingly less subtle disrespect of Tom Brady. I wonder if Brady and King's professional relationship took some hits last year or if Brady cut King off after all of King's stupidity regarding spygate and the Pats.

To even field a question about trading Brady shows how out of touch this moron is with reality. This offense went from greatest ever to 19th in the league. This offense, without Tom Brady, isn't even statistically middle of the pack. It's technically below league average. From best of ALL TIME to below average for this season, a season without many great offenses to begin with. Let's get some perspective. I love Matt Cassel and everything he's done for this team this season and he has FAR exceeded my wildest expectations, but let's have some sanity.

I don't see why people are riding King's ass about this. He answered an email about Brady, said that he didn't think they'd trade him, and even broke his response down into multiple questions/reasons. Heck, the title he uses before answering the question says it all:

I'VE CONTEMPLATED THIS. AND NO, FRANKLY, I DON'T THINK IT'S VERY POSSIBLE.

Given that this message board has a thread on this very notion where some posters here actually like the idea, I don't see why anyone would attack King because he answered an email. Are people just not bothering to read the linked article?

No, I read it. The fact that he even included it is worthy enough of attack, just as the OP of the thread you refer to was ridiculed. Acknowledging a question so absurd, even if he ultimately comes to the right conclusion, is basis for attack.

Sorry if I expect the national writers who get paid a ton of money to write this stuff should be held to bigger standards than a message board of fans.

Not to mention whoever started that thread must be a moron. Same to any who agreed.

Yeah, the fact that he "contemplated" it alone makes him a moron. It's like saying you "contemplated" cheating on your wife and then decided against it. You're still a jerk for thinking about it in the first place.

With all due respect to those bashing King for even posting the question, it is a valid one, especially for Belichick and the Patriots, who have a history of doing things that seem odd at face value.

Mind you, I'm not saying it should happen, merely that it's not unreasonable to ask if it could.

[And as to Brady being "worth" 2 1sts and Barrett Ruud--remember, that's on top of whatever they would have to pay Brady.]

Yes, it's amazing how much this team misses its starting RB, Maroney.

Just when you think that tom brady has proven all he could, and has run out of fuel from the 6th round draft pic tank...suddenly people start talking about how his knee is going to have an effect on his playing and once again, the spite tank is full. I havent heard of anyone that can utilize that spite motivation like Brady. Cant wait till september.
