2) Julian Edelman revealed an entertaining memory on Chris Long’s “Green Light” podcast, although, it probably wasn’t quite as funny when it happened.
According to Edelman, a skirmish between he and defensive back Stephon Gilmore in 2017 drew Belichick’s ire during a film session, with the head coach making it clear he wasn’t pleased about it.
“When I used to like fight in practice,” Edelman said via MassLive.com. “I got into a fight with (Stephon) Gilmore. He puts it on and he’ll just sit and rewind it like 45 times. With silence!”
“So he sits and rewinds it like 45 times and he stands up and says like, ‘What the f— are we doing! We can’t have this!’ Just going on and just ringing me like, ‘You know what Edelman? You’re over here thinking you’re a tough guy.’ Just getting on me in front of the team… but I think low-key he loved it.”

What to Do With Wynn?
Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston
pondered the situation with
Isaiah Wynn, which remains an interesting one and leaves the Patriots with a difficult decision heading into this season.
Curran suggests possibly trading Wynn, which while possibly giving New England draft capital in 2023 is appealing, it joins the trade of Shaq Mason in that it creates another issue.
Complicating things even further is the injury history of Trent Brown and the fact he hasn’t played at left tackle since he handled that role in 2018. Brown was missing from the team’s practice earlier this week, although there was no context behind the absence.
He had been present previously, so it’s tough to say why he wasn’t out there during the Patriots’ session on Tuesday.
However, the idea of Yodny Cajuste, who filled in at left tackle on Tuesday, being the guy potentially protecting Mac Jones’ blindside in 2022 if the team were to trade Wynn and Brown was to suffer an injury and miss time isn’t exactly appealing.
At the same time, the Patriots are in a tough spot. They have Wynn in the final year of his contract after picking up his fifth-year option. Letting him walk at the end of the season isn’t ideal, especially if they can potentially get something for him and clear his money off the books.
As Curran points out, given the team’s cash-strapped situation, moving Wynn would certainly solve that.
At the same time, it creates another problem they’ll need to solve because they just don’t have the depth to weather it. This is a team that doesn’t have the luxury of a deep group of tackles and is heading into a key year.

With the long-time coordinator in Las Vegas, New England is using “new terminology, new words.”
www.patspulpit.com
“It’s been dope so far,”
Kendrick Bourne said,
via ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss. “
Joe Judge, our newest member, he’s doing a great job. Really just new terminology, new words. Football is football, so it’s just about learning new words, getting the old words out. And just applying my abilities to the new system.
“I think he’s putting us in a position to be successful. I’m excited so far. I’ve rushed the ball a lot, doing different things for myself. And he’s even using other players and their strengths. Hopefully, we’ll have a great year. We’ll see how it goes.”

Devin McCourty officially retires
The New England Patriots made a critical roster move on Friday, June 2, to save salary cap space.
heavy.com
McCourty’s retirement and roster spot switch with safety Joshuah Bledsoe brought the Patriots’ cap space for $13.28 million according to salary cap expert Miguel Benzan. Bledsoe’s $940,000 salary took the place of McCourty’s $1.165 million for the top 15 roster spots, which freed up $225,000, Benzan wrote.
A three-time Super Bowl champion, McCourty played 13 seasons for the Patriots and made two Pro Bowl selections. McCourty tallied 35 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, three sacks, 971 tackles, and 110 pass deflections in his career.
Now, Devin McCourty will follow in Jason McCourty’s footsteps into broadcasting. Jason McCourty has been part of the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” since his retirement from his playing career last year, and he worked as a radio analyst with Westwood One.
Devin McCourty joined NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” pregame show, “Football Night in America” in May. Similar to his brother, Devin McCourty “is also expected to call some games for Westwood”.
Patriots release DT
Justus Tavai, the younger brother of LB
Jahlani Tavai
Justus would be re-signed on June 12 before being waived again on August 27; he had originally signed on May 19. His departure left QB/WR
Malik Cunningham, TE
Johnny Lumpkin and LB
Jourdan Heilig as the only players remaining from the spring UDFA signings.
The Patriots announced that they have released DL Justus Tavai. Tavai was signed by New England as a rookie free agent out of San Diego State on May 19, 2023.

Defensive tackle Justus Tavai's time with the Patriots came to an end on Friday.
www.nbcsports.com
Justus Tavai finished out his college time at San Diego State and recorded 38 tackles and 3.5 sacks while being named the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year during his lone season with the Aztecs. He previously played in 25 games at Hawaii and had 72 tackles to go with four sacks in those appearances.
This is a compilation of various reports from the Patriots' open media day of the Organized Team Activity.
www.patsfans.com
The first observation is that Mac Jones is clearly the number one QB. He was 13 of 13 in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11. Greg Bedard called the workout in shells, helmets, and shorts as crisp. A far cry from what we saw last year. Bill O’Brien was clearly in charge and organized. Mac Jones stressed four points in his press conference. 1.) It is a new relationship (with O’Brien) and we are building trust. 2.) Everyone is on the same page. 3.) We are building confidence. 4.) Need to bring your best every day.
UDFA Malik Cunningham played at WR and looked pretty good but he did have a drop which is to be expected in a player switching positions. His athleticism was very obvious. Cunningham even got a few reps with the 1st team and Mac Jones. He had a very good catch on a pass from Trace McSorley that was behind him. Many said it was the catch of the day.

Patriots Talked to Washington On Draft Day
NESN’s Zack Cox
spotted an interesting moment that the Washington Commanders shared on Friday, with the Commanders apparently reaching out to the Patriots on draft day looking to move up to the #16 spot overall.
In the video, Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew placed a call to Patriots Personnel executive Eliot Wolf, looking to make a deal to move up. Wolf then asked for Washington’s third-round pick in return, which Mayhew rejected. He instead said he might be willing to give up a fourth, but wasn’t willing to part with a 3rd round pick.
Wolf then offered to include an additional sixth-rounder in the deal, but Washington still rejected the offer.
As a result, the Commanders ultimately stayed put and selected cornerback Emmanual Forbes out of Mississippi State, while New England would go on to take Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez.

UDFA WR
David Wallis signs after he impressed during a rookie minicamp tryout; OL
Andrew Steuber released
The Patriots invited David Wallis to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, and the undrafted receiver did enough to earn a spot on the New England roster.
www.cbsnews.com
The Patriots signed undrafted rookie free-agent wide receiver David Wallis on Monday.
www.nbcsportsboston.com
Wallis played college football at Randolph-Macon, a Division III program. The 22-year-old racked up 146 receptions for 3,144 yards and 34 touchdowns in 42 total games. Last season, he tallied 53 receptions for 957 yards and 12 TDs.
“I’ve heard it’s going great,” said Breer. Honestly, that’s from multiple people today. There are people who’ve been there every day. "
www.patsfans.com
The Patriots OTAs thus far have had Jacoby Brissett taking first reps with the offense, followed by Bailey Zappe and then Drake Maye. The coaches want Maye to earn the starter reps, which is good. But now is the time (Mandatory minicamp) to get Maye more reps as the #2 QB.
Zappe has many fans in Patriots Nation, and several of them are actively campaigning for him to be the starter this season. Ah…to put it politically correct, heck no. I was thinking about a more descriptive four-letter word. Well, you get the idea.
The coaches and front office knew what Zappe has to offer and brought in three quarterbacks this year. An established veteran in Brissett who has much more upside, the third overall pick (Maye) who is the quarterback of the future, and a late-round pick in Joe Milton who while raw, has some intriguing skills.
Zappe’s numbers were almost across the board to be inferior to the player he replaced, Mac Jones. Completion percentage, TD percentage, Interception percentage, Passing Success percentage, Yards per attempt, Yards per game, and Passer rating.
The Patriots made an investment in Maye, so how much longer will he lose reps to Bailey Zappe? They need to get him the work to prepare him (sooner or later) to become the starting quarterback.

First round draft pick
Will Campbell signs a four-year contract with the Patriots
The Patriots announced today the signing of first-round draft pick T Will Campbell.
www.patriots.com
Campbell, 21, was selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 4th overall pick out of Louisiana State. The 6-foot-6, 319-pounder, started all 12 games at left tackle last season and won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the top lineman in the SEC and was a consensus first team All-American.
The Patriots have reportedly agreed to terms with No. 4 overall pick Will Campbell on four-year contract. Here are the contract details.

Offensive tackle
Will Campbell, selected fourth overall by New England in the recent NFL Draft, has agreed to a four-year deal worth $43.66 million in a “fully guaranteed rookie contract,”
according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The deal also reportedly includes a $28.39 million signing bonus, and was brokered by Roc Nation Sports.
“Campbell has signed it,” Rapoport noted upon sharing the news on social media Tuesday afternoon.
Campbell, 21, was selected out of LSU to help rebuild a porous offensive line that hampered quarterback Drake Maye during his rookie season in 2024.
