"Super Bowl 51 New England Patriots Malcolm Mitchell Highlights - MUST SEE for Patriots Fans"

I found it interesting that when I google the words 'Malcolm Mitchell' the search engine does not respond with the subtitle 'former football player' like it does for nearly every other retired NFL player, but instead returns with the description 'Malcolm Mitchell - author and poet'.

A sad ending: Phillip Adams

In memory of Phillip Adams, RIP, who would have turned 36 today
Born July 20, 1988 in Rock Hill, South Carolina
Died April 8, 2021 at the age of 32 in Rock Hill, South Carolina
Patriot CB/S, 2011; uniform #26

Signed as a free agent on September 21, 2011

[*]- Signed and released three times during the 2011 season.
[*]- Played in six games for the Pats with one interception, one pass deflection, eight tackles (seven solo) and one quarterback hit.
[*]- Was with six teams over six NFL seasons, playing in 78 games from 2010 to 2015.
[*]- Previously played for the 49ers, and later with the Seahawks, Raiders, Jets and Falcons.
[*]- Was a 7th round draft pick by San Francisco in 2010, from South Carolina State (Div 1 FCS level school in the MEAC).
[*]- On April 7, 2021 he shot and killed six people at a house in South Carolina; he took his own life after a standoff the following day.

Oct 14, 2011:
Patriots Sign DT Marcus Harrison; Release DB Phillip Adams | Patriots.com
Adams, 5-11, 192 pounds, was originally signed by the Patriots on Sept. 21 and was active but did not play in the games at Buffalo on Sept. 25 and at Oakland on Oct. 2 before being released on Oct. 8 and signed again on Oct. 13. He was originally drafted in 2010 by San Francisco in the seventh round (224 overall) out of South Carolina State. Adams played in 15 games for the 49ers last season and finished with 13 total tackles and one pass defensed.

Nov 23, 2011:
Adams, a former seventh-round pick (224th overall) of the San Francisco 49ers, was initially signed by New England in late September and was on and off the roster for a bit before injuries and departures created an opportunity for him. Over the past four games, Adams has appeared on 129 defensive snaps while serving as a nickel corner and Monday was his best game of the season.

Not only did Adams register his first pro interception, but, according to target stats logged by analytical site Pro Football Focus, he allowed only one 7-yard reception on three targets (in 19 total pass coverage situations). In fact, in PFF's game grades, Adams was second behind only defensive end Andre Carter in overall rating.

For the season, Adams has allowed seven catches for 87 yards in 13 targets (during 85 pass coverage situations). He hasn't allowed a touchdown and opposing quarterbacks have a mere 42.8 rating while throwing at him.

Nov 29, 2011:
Adams, a seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2010, has had three stints with the Patriots this season, appearing in six games. With injuries, he's worked as slot corner in recent weeks and appeared on a season-high 51 snaps against the Eagles. Overall, Adams has played 180 total defensive snaps while appearing at corner in the last five games (he also played on special teams).

Adams' release could be a positive sign for the health of second-year cornerback Devin McCourty, who has sat out the last two games after injuring his shoulder against the Jets in Week 10.

April 8, 2021:
On April 7, a former NFL football player, Phillip Adams, emerged from the woods behind the Lesslies' property in Rock Hill with two handguns -- a .45-caliber and 9 mm -- and opened fire. He shot and killed Robert, 70, Barbara, 69, Adah, 9, and Noah, 5. He also shot and killed two air conditioning repairmen, James Lewis and Robert Shook, both 38, working at the house before Adams fled to another location, where police said Adams shot and killed himself after a standoff. He was 32.

No known motive exists, and the connection between Adams and the Lesslies, if even one existed prior to April 7, remains unknown as well.

Dec 14, 2021:
An autopsy revealed unusually severe brain disease in the frontal lobe of the former NFL player accused of fatally shooting six people in Rock Hill, South Carolina, before killing himself in April, authorities announced Tuesday.

The 20 years that former cornerback Phillip Adams spent playing football "definitely ... gave rise" to a diagnosis of Stage 2 chronic traumatic encephalopathy, said Dr. Ann McKee, who examined his brain.

The degenerative disease known as CTE is linked to head trauma and concussions that has been shown to cause a range of symptoms, including violent mood swings and memory loss.

March 29, 2024:
Nearly three years after former professional football player Phillip Adams killed six people and then himself in Rock Hill, South Carolina, his family is now adding the National Football League to their lawsuit against his alma mater.

A judge in Orangeburg County's civil court granted a motion by Adams' estate on Monday, March 25, to add the NFL to their ongoing complaint against South Carolina State University. The new complaint against the league largely mirrors the one filed against the school: that the NFL failed to properly care for Adams and had him play a sport that caused him head trauma.

Other pro football players with New England connections born on this date include:

Ron Stone, 53; (born July 20, 1971)
Born and raised in Boston, Stone went to West Roxbury High School and Boston College.
A fourth round draft pick by Dallas in 1994, he was a three-time Pro Bowl right guard for the Giants and Niners from 2000-2002. Stone played in 173 games over 12 seasons from 1994 to 2005, plus 11 playoff games. He also played in two Super Bowls, winning a championship in Super Bowl 30 when Dallas beat Pittsburgh.

Other pro football players of note born on July 20:

- **** Stanfel (1927-2015); Hall of Fame guard was a five-time All Pro for Detroit and Washington in the fifties, winning two NFL championships.

- Jake Scott (1945-2020); five-time Pro Bowl safety won two Super Bowls with Miami in the seventies.

- Jordan Gross, 44 (1980); Pro Bowl left tackle for Carolina started 167 games over his 11-year career from 2003 to 2013.

- Casey Wiegmann, 51 (1973); the center played in 227 games from 1997-2011, mostly with the Chiefs.

- D.J. Williams, 42 (1982); linebacker played nine of his 11 seasons for Denver, making 897 tackles with 75 tackles for a loss.

A couple of announcer's nightmares (and torture for the kid - as well as their teacher - growing up):

John Prchlik, born July 20, 1925.
John went to Yale and was drafted by the Boston Yanks in 1947. He won two NFL championships as a defensive tackle for the Bobby Layne era Detroit Lions over the Cleveland Browns in the early fifties.

Dave 'Buster' Hathcock, 78 (born July 20, 1943).
The defensive back won a championship with Green Bay in a game that would later become known as Super Bowl I.

Patriots Trade Babe Parilli to Jets

July 20, 1968:
The Boston Patriots trade Babe Parilli to the New York Jets for Mike Taliaferro. I get it that the Patriots were in rebuilding mode and needed to get younger, but this was never going to be a good value trade. At least Parilli received a super bowl ring as Joe Namath's backup.

July 20, 2018:
Offensive tackle Andrew Jelks retires from the NFL without having played a single down. The Pats signed Jelks as an undrafted rookie in 2017 despite his having missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons at Vanderbilt due to preseason injuries. The Patriots placed Jelks on the reserve/non-football injury list on September 2, 2017 due to a torn ACL suffered during pre-season workouts his senior year at Vanderbilt; he remained on the NFI last for the entire year. (Note: NFI has no minimum salary like IR does.) Rookies were scheduled to report to training camp on July 22 in 2018, so I am speculating that Jelks failed his physical, leading to the retirement.

July 20, 2017:
Chase Farris is waived with a non-football injury designation. The Pats had signed the guard from Ohio State to their practice squad on October 5, 2016. While preparing for training camp on his own time he tore his Achilles tendon and would have missed the 2017 season regardless. Farris never re-signed with another NFL team, though he did play in the short-lived Alliance of American Football in 2019. He had graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor's in Consumer and Family Financial Services, and now works as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual in Columbus Ohio.

July 20, 2014:
The Patriots sign free agent Nate Byham. A sixth round pick by San Francisco, the tight end from Pitt was considered to be one of the best blocking tight ends of the 2010 draft. Byham played in a handful of games for the Niners and Bucs from 2010 to 2013; Foxborough was his last NFL stop when the Pats released him five days later.

July 20, 2012:
New England releases rookie free agent WR Matt Roark. It's never a good sign for your pro football career when a team gives up on you this quickly, and that was the case here: the 6'5 receiver never drew interest from any NFL team after that - but he remains a legend in Lexington, Kentucky.

July 20, 2012:

July 20, 2011:

July 20, 2010:
Bret Lockett is re-signed as an exclusive rights free agent. The backup safety and special teamer played in ten games for the Pats that season before landing on IR with a groin injury. More injuries were the hallmark of his stay in New England: he was placed on IR at the end of camp in 2011 with a chest injury, and again in 2012 due to a groin injury. According to his social media the self promoter is in SoCal now, working as a corporate trainer and business consultant helping entrepreneurs executives find more revenue paths.

July 20, 2006:
The Pats waive Jeff Roehl, an offensive tackle originally signed as an undrafted rookie in 2003 by the Giants. Roehl was a victim of final roster cuts in 2005 after spending the entire offseason with the Pats, and had been allocated to NFL Europe earlier in 2006. After spending a couple years playing indoor football he became a music producer and DJ.

July 20, 2005:
Tedy Bruschi elects to sit out the season while recovering from a stroke.

July 20, 2000:

July 20, 1998:
Patriots re-sign exclusive rights free agent Adam Vinatieri to a one-year contract.

July 20, 1995:
New England signs their first round draft pick, cornerback Ty Law.

July 20, 1987:
Roland James undergoes arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The safety was limited to nine games and one start in '87.

July 20, 1985:
Patriots re-sign center Guy Morriss; he played in 59 games for the Pats at the end of his NFL career from 1984 to 1987. After that he served as the team's offensive line coach in 1988-89. Morriss played in 217 NFL games from 1973 to 1987, the first eleven coming as the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles.

July 20, 1984:
The team reports that Clarence Weathers will be out indefinitely after suffering a broken foot. The wide receiver was limited to nine games in '84 and moved on to the Browns the following season.

July 20, 1978:
The Patriots re-sign Leon Gray to a two-year contract extension. Unfortunately the Sullivans decided to save some money by trading Gray away to Houston a year later. At the time John Hannah reportedly said, "We just traded away our Super Bowl".

July 20, 1976:
Bob Geddes retires. The backup inside linebacker was with the Pats for three seasons, and had appeared in 13 games the previous season.

July 20, 1969:
Larry Garron retires after nine seasons with the Patriots. Garron was a four-time American Football League All-Star; he averaged 5.6 yards per carry in 1961 and 5.9 the following season. An original Patriot, he is a member of the Pats All-Decade Team of the 1960s.

The Pats used to barnstorm in the off season with a basketball team. They'd travel around challenging local pickup teams at HS gyms. I remember Garron, Eisenhauer, Buoniconti among those playing against my HS teachers. I've mentioned before Buoniconti absolutely wrecking the vice principal when he momentarily forgot what sport he was playing. Hardest hit I've ever seen on a BB court, including all the Celts/Pistons, Celts/Lakers roughhousing.

One of the players immortalized by contributions in big game playoff performances who weren’t hall of famers but came up in the biggest moment. Only had to be one game or even a few key plays and they became legend. Wiggins, Jr Redmond, Antwan Harris, Chris Hogan, Burkhead to name a few. Crazy run with all the contributions over the years.

Keep your eye on Tory Horton this year. Another Colorado st alum wr. Don’t think the Pats need his type with Polk being drafted but he was fun to watch last season.
