The real question is David Andrews. If Josh wants him back, then our IOL is Strange-Andrews-Onwenu. If not then it will be Robinson-Strange-Onwenu. Either way Strange is a starter and our best OL-man at the moment.

Not that he's any great shakes himself, and is crazy overpaid, but Onemenu's our best OLman right now.

I think that's about right. The roster is just awful, particularly in positions which are difficult and expensive to fill.

But we have the QB and a professional coaching staff, so progress seems actually possible, and that in an entirely new state of affairs.
We have a truly horrible roster that will be very difficult to improve??? What nonsense!

We will sign two OT's, at least one top level WR, and we will re-sign Hooper. Will that be almost impossible by trade or in free agency. Of course not.

And then we'll add a bit of depth and competition at WR and RB.
================
The team didn't sign top free agents from other teams in 2024, adding only Gibson and Hooper. Now they will sign two years of free agents in a much better market.
========
And of course, we have added Josh and will add more coaches. Arguably, all (including Josh) will be better than last year. Even if we have a couple of holdovers, they will likely be better under Josh and the other coaches he will bring in.

Oh come on. It is not necessary to be delusionally optimistic to qualify for fandom:

This...:

"We have a truly horrible roster that will be very difficult to improve??? What nonsense!"

...is flatly contradicted by this:

"We will sign two OT's, at least one top level WR, and we will re-sign Hooper. Will that be almost impossible by trade or in free agency. Of course not.

The idea in particular that OT's are readily to be acquired by trade/free agency (or in this year's draft class) and that replacing a quartet of failed WR's (and a passrusher) will be a piece of cake are, to borrow an expression, nonsense.

This is even more certainly the cases given we virtually wasted the entirety of last year (and a couple of years before that).

I think Washington is a good example of how it can be turned around quickly. Yes they got the QB but they drafted and signed FA’s. I believe in the division round last week Washington had five rookies and eight free agents playing in the game.

To get to the NFL all players are the best of the best. Motivation and being put in a position to succeed makes a huge difference. With a QB to build around and a coaching staff that will demand their best, there is no reason that the Pats shouldn't return to being competitive next year.

You may choose to believe that we will have a truly horrible roster after free agency and the draft.

That is simply your choice.

I hear the argument over how Drake might get "ruined" by too much change, but I sort of think it's all just magical thinking, something to worry about if you are looking for something to worry about: the sort of drivel Breer whines about on a daily basis.

Josh is smart. Drake is smart. They'll work it out. Both will have input into the development of a scheme which takes advantage of both of their skills and of the roster as it develops. Josh may have the social skills of a DMV lady, but he knows offensive football.

At least they're keeping some continuity with AVP as the QB coach which is good. If he gets ruined, it will be because of McD.

Edit: was late to the party and had not heard he was a goner….so sorry so sad. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

MassLive reported AVP won't come back in a different role.

I just don’t like the EP offense, and I don’t like them switching offenses on Maye.
Vrabel isn't an EP guy either so since he's the HC and not McDaniels who is to say they dont run the WCO?????? A lot of us here are operating on a lot of assumptions without many facts to back them up.

Could they be considering keeping Bob McAdoo as assistant QB coach?

I heard someone report that AVP coached Maye and Brissett while McAdoo was Milton’s coach.

McAdoo could keep his current title. I don't that he would need to change title.

I would hope that McCartney is our QB coach or assistant QB coach.

Josh McDaniels' 2021 roster vs. 2025 roster (as of now):

QB:
2021: Mac Jones
2025: Drake Maye

RB:
2021: Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, James White
2025: Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson

TE:
2021: Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith
2025: Hunter Henry, Jaheim Bell

WR:
2021: Kendrick Bourne, Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Agholor, N'Keal Harry
2025: Kendrick Bourne, Pop Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Ja’Lynn Polk

OL:
2021: David Andrews, Mike Onwenu, Shaq Mason, Isaiah Wynn, Trent Brown
2025: David Andrews, Mike Onwenu, Cole Strange, Vederian Lowe, Caedan Wallace

2021’s group is definitely a bit better on the OL, but at QB, Maye is a lot better than Jones. The other groups are not substantially better than one another year to year. The one thing to keep in mind is that 2025’s group still has free agency and the draft left to come. Meeting 2021’s total overall talent level is not unreasonable.

It’s not an assumption that MacDaniels runs an EP offense. Feel free to name an OC who changed their system.
