Interesting choice of player to restructure. Did not expect that one. They are now at around $9M in cap space, though I believe that's still using the top 51 formulation...

This probably also means Jonnu is guaranteed to be on the roster for a while. A release this year or next year would create a ton of dead money:

They love Jonnu Smith. Maybe he's the new Ben Watson. Underwhelming first years with the Patriots then he becomes a perennial top guy on the edge of the Pro Bowl.

That would be nice. The only reason I'm still concerned is even the good camp reports about him from this summer acknowledged that his nice plays were usually the result of a play schemed specifically to get the ball in his hands, as opposed to being a traditional tight end who runs routes and gets the ball if he's open.

Don't get me wrong, that's a valuable type of player to have on offense (Patterson comes to mind). I just wish we had more than one traditional tight end on the roster.

It makes you scratch your head a little, but then I went back and saw that Jonnu had way more receptions than every other player in camp not named Jakobi. So makes me wonder if he's actually going to get a lot of use this year, and going forward, and we just haven't seen it yet...

Those numbers were already pretty big in 23 & 24. Adding 2.6 likely doesn't change how they treat it moving forward. And that money was going on the books this year anyway. So much ado about nothing.

2nd Team Getting Their First Start
After going from 51 to 53 and with everything accounted for (IR etc) Miguel has the Patriots at 4.24M.

So the Pats have just enough or almost just enough to get through the year. If they do a few extensions like Bourne and Hunter they would have enough cap space to bring in a few decent (but not great) players to help round out the roster.

In the Starting Line-Up
Dawson Knox, a guy who can't block and is the equivalent of Greg Baty, signs for $54m for 4 yrs, or $12m per.

Bills, TE Knox reach 4-year, $53.6M extension

This puts Henry and Smith's contract into contect
Yup….based upon one year of production (he was a non-factor in his first two years, with opposing defenses preoccupied by Allen’s running potential and Diggs, plus a mix of Beasley, Sanders and an ascending Davis.

Really, the contract is based upon his YAC abilities and 9 TDs. He has a lot of physical gifts and clearly looks to be an ascending player and they are almost certainly paying him for (anticipated) future production. The athleticism and big play abilities are very similar to Smith’s (who had 9 touchdowns during his last year in Tennessee), actually, before Smith’s big UFA deal with the Pats.

Plus, because he wasn't eligible for free agency the Bill's are probably getting a “discount”, compared to what he could've received it if he were an UFA like Smith. This should be a lesson for the posters here try to pretend that it is quite easy to find a legitimate TE1 in the draft/FA/trade market. It isn’t. At all.

What a waste of 2022 cap space...

Agholor
jonnu
Bourne
H henry

I wish now that bill didn't cheap out on OC and got someone else. We see to be penny wise , pound foolish by getting back Patricia and Judge.

Why sign tight ends if we do not know how to run TE concepts.

Never seen 2 more highly paid offensive guys do so little. Why aren't our TE's dominating??
I really hope they spent the bye preparing to unveil these secret weapons.
Oh, and an odd time to restructure to make cap room this season - is there a reason??
Is BB planning to sign someone?

This is an old post; this was done in September not now.
