These people realize Darnold was out there with under 2 minutes left, throwing passes, right? By their “logic,” it would have been okay for the Patriots defenders to try and injure Darnold.
Of course, basic sportsmanship and human decency alone wouldn’t stop the Patriots defenders from doing that. They also know that a healthy Darnold equals a New England victory, so they don’t want to jeopardize that.
This is how I feel about it too. If you want to concede the game, pull your starters. Don’t leave your starters in and expect the other team to put in their backups. I’ve noticed Belichick is even more adamant now about this, and I think he also wants his team conditioned to a 60 minute game of full intensity. No soft zones. No freebies.
