I am trying to understand the logic behind the rumor that there is a rift between Belichick and Welker. Conjecture leads me to think that Belichick told the players not to talk back to the Jets during the week leading up to the divisional game, and Welker defied him by giving his infamous "foot-laden" inteview. From what I have perused here, Welker blew Belichick off when called to the latter's office. Furthermore, Wilfork has since publicly questioned the decision to bench Welker.
Again I do not know how much credence can be applied to the above paragraph, but there was something else that struck me as odd about last Sunday's game. I noticed that the Patriots seemed a bit subdued and even perhaps sullen when they came out of the tunnel. Brady, in particular, looked uncannily stolid. Maybe it resonated with me because I am so used to seeing this team come out fired up for a huge playoff game against an opponent that adds fuel to the fire via the press. However, as stated earlier, this is all conjecture, and doubtless far from an accurate portrayal of what transpired with the Patriots, Belichick, and Welker in the days leading up to last Sunday's game.
