Jason LaCanfora: Pats really want Higgins "He's going to New England"

Bengals could be playing possum announcing they Wil tag him with FA around the corner.. I'd love to have tee.. but we need to get this OL situation fixed ASAP or maye day won't have time to get to tree top catch Higgins.
We have the $$$$$$$ for both: we can have our cake and eat it too.

Absolutely.. asinine.. for us to ever consider trading him! Gonzo Will have a new contract by next season minimum.. he's an all pro, and the best CB in the game IMO.. guy has literally no pass rush help and still locks up WRs.
Yeah Phil has had some really bizarre takes lately.

It's a dead time for patriots reporters right now.. so they come up with asinine takes LOL.. there only 2 players on the entire roster off limits right now.. Drake and gonzo.
My guess is he doesn't want to get rid of Gonzo as much as they need to have something to talk about. He's usually pretty sensible.

Reported Burrow is tweaking is contract to allow bengals to retain both he and Higgins.. I say there's an even greater chance now especially with chase and Higgins having the same agents.
Where is that reported? It also doesn't really make sense, if they re-signed Higgins right now then they wouldn't need the cash right now because the cap hits would be backloaded. Having Burrow re-structure would also further backload his money and create a nightmare situation in 2-3 years.

FWIW, Phil Perry said he has been hearing around the league that most people don't believe the Bengals will end up tagging Higgins. He said it wasn't coming from anyone in Cincy, but they were people who could be in the know.
It does feel like a very Cincy move. Get "the word out" that they "intend" to tag Higgins in order to get other teams to start trade talks with them, without actually tagging the guy, because once they assign the tag then they immediately lose all those cap dollars until such time he is traded. And if he is never traded, they're stuck with that cost on their cap.

Instead they just act like he's already tagged and if they never get anywhere with trade talks then they just never actually tag him and let him hit the open market, which spares their cap.

This is the same article we talked about weeks ago, where all he did was say he was "willing to" get his future salary paid upfront as a signing bonus, to give short-term cap space to the team. No **** pal. I'm "willing to" get paid my entire next 3 years' salaries upfront too.

Yes, that's what I was referring too also did you hear about higgins allegedly firing his agent and hiring chase agent? Anyway it's just party n ******** until something really happens.

Perry pitch the idea of us trading Gonzo for tee Higgins.. absolutely not! We have just 2 home grown all pro players on the entire roster. I love the idea of tee... coming here.. unless something changes he's staying in the natti.. especially with both he and chase having the same agent now.

Did Perry have a stroke? The crap he’s been spewing this offseason certainly makes it seem like he did.

Yeah... these guys get bored this time of year as thier is nothing of note to report so they start making silly suggestions. We have 2 home grown all pros Gonzo and schooler and another in the making in Drake. You never trade your all pro talent. On a lighter note.. I'm getting the sense that we will get alot of good but 2nd tier players that fit what Vrabel wants on offense and defense.

If I remember correctly Perry also pitched the idea of trading the 4th overall pick for Myles Garrett AND a third rounder for Cooper Kupp. Thank God he is a sports writer and not the GM of the New England Patriots.

Agreed. Typically he's a great patriots sports writer. But that was just asinine.. feels like kupp will probably be released or traded for a 5th ? Garrett still am absolute beast.. he wants to go to a contender.

I believe Higgins will not only want to sign a long term deal instead of playing another year on the Tag but also wants to be the top FA in this next free agency and sign the most lucrative deal, players have these egos and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for him to be the most wanted player.
He's gonna tell them to pound sand if they come with this idea of tagging him again.

He’ll say that he will continue negotiating with them through mid March and beyond. If they tag him then he will tell them he has cut off all long term negotiations and will sit out half the year. This will put a huge dent in their cap for not much return.

Ultimately he is interested in returning to Cincinnati but only at his market price. If they once again hold him off the open market when they’ve had multiple years to come to an agreement then he will be done with them.

Total Hogwash. There are plenty of players who just singed contracts and due to dead money will be on this roster. Antonio Gibson was a bright spot this year and is not going anywhere. Why would the Pats move on from Cole Strange this year? Keion White? Hunter Henry? Davon Godchaux's contract is not friendly enough this year to cut him, and he won't be traded. Stop vomiting the stuff you hear in the media. To turn over just 40% of the roster would be a massive undertaking. That means 60% will return. Two may be considered all-pros, but there are plenty of others off limits because dumping them is not conducive to business.

It really makes no difference to us at this point. We have $130+ in cap space. When free agency opens in March, that will be spent quickly. It has to be if this roster is going to improve. If the Tee Higgins drama lasts to the draft, its too late for us. We cannot set aside $30-$35 million per year to a player who might become available. Higgins has to force the Bengals hand within two weeks if what you are saying is true. I just don't see that happening.
