empty suit
noun

a prominent person regarded as lacking substance, personality, or ability:
an ineffectual executive

"they're a bunch of Ivy League empty suits"
Kamala Harris, in other words.

My question is: Is Mayo a suckup (sycophant for those that know) to B&J K? Being the “nice guy” or as I prefer rahrah coach he is…could it be? Not saying I dislike him, just think there were better options (if ownership was willing to pony up the $).

Apples and oranges. I remember that season well. It was a true rebuild, a restructuring of the roster and the installation of new systems. The defense played better. There was a return to fundamentals, a culture of accountability, and hope for the future. Do you think that's what we're getting this season?
Last year was not a rebuild. It was more Bill Belichick patchwork. Defensively the difference in passing defense was 30 yards per game so far and like 22 yards per game in rushing. So there has been a decline but not much (and our schedule is frontloaded this year). We are also actually doing slightly better in ppg. But it's the same story. Decent run defense that gets ripped apart by high tier passing offenses.

Also remember we had one of the worst special teams in the NFL last year.

Offensively we went from 30th in the league in yards to 31st. Passing went way down, rushing went up. And the line has had more injury issues this year.

Incompentence was a big reason we made the coaching switch. They were just not the old Patriots playing disciplined situational football.

it wasn't an ongoing rebuild? Okay... fine, term it how you want... its inconsequential...

What is was was the last year of Mac Jones... The guy who kicked off the rebuild three years prior. It didn't work. Not every build goes smoothly, does it?

Was Bills time over? yeah. we all saw the defining moment in germany, we all knew it was coming. Guy had a good run, it's over, he's gone.

This year is not about Bill... No matter how bad the roster was coming into the season, its not about Bill. Its about what Mayo & Co have been able to do. They have done jack **** through 5 games. They botched the off season coaching hires. They butchered free agency, got catfished by every pretty prospect who used them, abused them and put em away wet... The draft? **** all if I know what they did besides make a no brainer pick in the 3 spot.

The team they have trotted out every week is playing bad fundamental football. and every week its getting worse.

Thats why these questions are getting asked. It is exactly what happened in BB's first year. How many times has it been said here Kraft almost got rid of Belichick in year 1? More times than I can remember. The difference? You saw progress on the field, if not in the results. You saw a team being built.

You seeing any of that now? I certainly am not.

Whoa. Mayo is getting eviscerated right now on 98.5 as totally unprepared for the job. Bedard holds him directly responsible for losing to both Seattle and Miami. He supposedly does not sign off on either the offensive or defensive game plans and appears to have no defined role in the building. Yikes.

Its been said many times but not sure it's true. RK and BB both said they had a 5 year plan to get to the super bowl, why would he fire him after year 2 if the plan was a 5 year rebuild. Of course TB sped the 5 years way up.

at the end of year 1, there was regression in terms of the overall competitiveness, and the win loss record went backwards. The media at the time was banging the drum hard over belichick, who iirc was not a popular hire. How true or not anything said in hindsight is, i dunno. I'd take everything, including what I said, with more than a pinch of salt.

Well, he wasn't doing the game plan for the defense the last few years, either. Steve was doing that and Mayo was "coordinating" the defense.

But maybe that's his job as HC, to coordinate. Maybe he's less of a decider and more of a leader, making sure people are doing what they're supposed to?

i don't think i understand that...

I've said this before: I fear Mayo was hired because RKK fell in love with his personal profile. Nothing to do with his football acumen or readiness for the job from the standpoint of experience.

You know I don’t doubt he’s an awesome guy/former player. The fact nepotism was rife and sycophancy goes hand in hand with it makes me think as you do. I must say watching a virgin hc try to do a good job is fun….BUT…he wasn’t setup to succeed which you have to do for a noob coach. Any job really. It was stacked against him from day 1. I hope the ship gets righted and doesn’t capsize…any more.

Wait, mayo has no defined role? How can that be? You as a hc say “this is my job I’m doing it…then delegate”. Simple management concepts 101. This could be where his years at whatever co he worked at before should have taught him. Unless bk did the hire for “diversity “ ie optics.

I held judgement when he was first introduced as the head coach even though I had serious doubts about his abilities. After a dismal 5 games, I don’t think he has what it takes. It isn’t just that Jacobo was bad, it’s that as the head coach he made no moves of significance in the off season. This was one of the worst off seasons we have had in the last 2 decades . His ability to make sound in game decisions is bad, he thinks being a buddy with the players will make the team strong but it has proved otherwise. Players want to win and when they don’t they point fingers at each other and cracks start to form. Unfortunately. I think we are stuck with him for at least 3 years as that is what RK will do. He won’t pull the trigger on him before that!!! This was a terrible hire, there were other options out there that were not even explored . How did anyone think that someone with such little experience coaching would be a good head coach is beyond me ?

I'm tired of everyone else being thrown under the buss to protect Kraft and his nepo baby.

Is Mayo a great coach, I don't know, probably not. Maybe he's terrible and will need to be replaced someday. But I KRAFT is the one who hired him. I blame KRAFT for this entire mess. He's the reason why this team is a dumpster fire right now.

I agree. With one caveat. I believe it was Kraft who made them leave $40,000,000 on the table.
If Wolf had an unlimited budget, then the whole mess us in him.

The question should have been: do you put a neophyte coach with little experience and few league connections in charge of a major rebuilding program along with a neophyte personnel manager?

The answer should have been: no.
The Krafts recognized this too. That is why Robyn Glazer is the EVP of Football Business.

In the NFL you have to pay a certain percentage of the cap over 5 years. You can't cheap out. You can have an outlier year. Unfortunately this was a ****ty situation where we had a ton of cap in a year where the cap was raised substantially and quality talent got resigned so the market was weak.

There was defensive FA talent. We should have plugged defensive holes with younger players on 3 and 4 year contracts.
