Is it time to sign a backup veteran IOL or two!!!

Yes I did watch the game and Prunty/Vidor looked good. Plus Woods who was ok last year did not play.

I don't care if Canada, Crossley or any others looked bad. There's at least 2-3 decent backups IMO.

How much deeper do teams go?

Vildor did Not look good. That was a lucky pick.

Charlie Woods sucks. Absolutely, positively Sucks. As do Canada, Crossley and All the others.

When Bill reached for pick, we didn't say that he was lucky when he followed his own intelligence instead of the mediots. Vrabel will miss in the future on a reach. Let's give him credit this time.

We are talking about Hudson who I've read hasn't ever played the position, as the 1st backup into the season.

And who is backup center?
Hudson getting snaps at right guard and providing back up cover on the 53 would seem to be good solution for a vet back up. Except as you say all of his 1400 nfl snaps are at tackle, he's never played guard before. Also all the reports coming out of both practice and the Colts preseason game are pretty negative suggesting he has struggled at guard so far.

Butler seems to be making the most of his opportunity and running with the 2s, but all his college experience and camp reps are at left guard. It'll be interesting if they try a few practices on the right,l. I'm not sure if there are any reports of that happening yet?

Back up right guard appears to be an issue at this moment in time.

Not any more. According to his Wikipedia page Van Roten plays center as well as both guard positions, and started at right guard a lot. Like, multiple seasons as a starting right guard. He’s now our top backup at all three IOL positions, I’d say.

Maybe problem solved!

This is what 5/6 corners look like on pretty much every team if you're lucky enough to have a decent backup.

Focus on guard before Van Roten (haha that should be an easy nick name for you) or tight end/RB.

That's when your backups do not look good.

Van Roten has taken snaps at all 5 OL spots during his career. Primarly at RG. But plenty at LG as well.

2025 - Took a snap at each of the tackle spots. Primarily RG
2024 - Took snaps at C for 3 games including 2 starts. Took 1 snap at LT. The rest at RG
2023 - Spent all year at RG
2022 - Took snaps at C in 5 games including 1 start. Took 1 snap at LG. Rest at RG
2021 - Spent all year at RG.
2020 - All year at RG
2019 - All year at LG
2018 - All year at LG
2017 - Very minimal snaps on the O-line. Was a lead FB mainly

Our backups have not looked good.

Isn't the point that we do NOT have a decent #4? This is critical since Davis cannot be counted on to be available.

Woods was claimed for the #4 position last year, replacing Austin. After watching Woods for a year, Vrabel brought in veteran Vildor, drafted Prunty, signed UDFA's and looked everywhere for "decent" backups.

I think Prunty has looked like a solid #4 corner and Vidor one of the better #5's we've had.

So I guess we disagree.

#6 is up in the air, but how many teams have 6 NFL level corners?

We shall see. It isn't even clear whether Vildor will make the 53.

With regard to Prunty, he has looked OK for a rookie. I guess you are comfortable with him starting Game One if Davis isn;t available. I think that he needs time to develop.

So, yes we do disagree. If Vildor improves and is good enough to be a solid veteran #4, then we are indeed in good shape. Woods is fine as a #6 CB/STer.

SUMMARY
I think that we are fine with Prunty as a rookie #5 CB/STer and with Woods as the #6 CB/STer.

The issue is whether Vildor can be our #4. This is important with Davis being injured often. This is at least the 3rd year when we have lacked a "decent" #4 CB. Vrabel has tried to upgrade the likes of Austin and Bryant.

Prunty has showed me enough that he deserves a shot to fill in early in the season, if needed.

Last year they made Woodson a starter directly out of camp. He was drafted similar and IMO didn't look any better than Prunty last summer.

This is how a team develops. If Prunty were to fail, which I don't think he will, then we're looking for more depth maybe.

Agree. Prunty has yet to show any evidence of hitting his ceiling, or even what his ceiling might be. He might end up being CB4 by end of camp, just by outplaying Woods, at the rate they’re going.

I’m not sure how much Vrabel bringing in Vildor, drafting Prunty, and “looking everywhere for decent backups” (as @mgteich said) is a judgement on Woods or how much it is the relentless drive to improve the roster. Better, faster, younger, at every position all the time.

I’m expecting that by next camp Prunty will be competing for CB2. I think he’s got the potential to be that good, that soon. Vildor looks like he’ll stick too, he might be CB4 next year. I think we’ve got some promising depth at CB.

Prunty was a fine pick by Vrabel, drafted much earlier than the analysts projected. Did anyone here even have him on the radar in the 5th? After he was picked, it seems that Vrabel had secured a top STer and a CB prospect, which was great.

Woodson was different. Many here wanted us to draft Swinson, Farmer and Woodson. Staff was able to figure out how to get all of them. Many of us would likely have picked the other two first and missed out on Woodson. Vrabel had him as a potential starter and he was right.

Prunty hasn't shown be nearly enough to compare him with Woodson, but that's OK.

As an aside, I think that the "plan" was for the veteran Vildor to be the #4 CB. That still might be the case. Is rookie Prunty really ready to start the first four games if Davis isn't ready? That's really putting a lot on a late round rookie.

I don't follow college so you and others would have a better opinion.

But from what I've read and seen I'd be comfortable with an early season test drive.

Late round rookies surprise all the time, and even though it was earlier than "analysts" thought it was still the 5th round.

Credit...for whom?

Backup Center is the bigger issue. GVR can fill-in at RG if need be.
