When you look at the writing on the wall, it's hard not to come to that conclusion.
No it isn't. There are many factors and possible motivations.
Nobody wants to see Brady traded, but how else do you explain passing on Clevelands offer for Garoppalo?
If reports are correct, why would the Patriots not trade there backup QB for the 12th overall pick at a minimum?
Garoppalo is going to get paid next year, by either the Patriots or someone else.
Reports usually aren't correct btw
But Brady is 40. What if he misses 4-5 games? Is jimmy g then more valuable than a draft pick?
What if Brady does hit the wall this year?
What if Brady sustains a serious injury.
What if Brady decides he does want to retire? A complete change of mind but at 40 thise decisions are very subject to change.
There are many reasons other than the stupidity of getting rid of the GOAT when he is playing as well as he ever has that you pass up a pick.
Oh and you don't pass it up you wait a year and tag and trade. So even if that ends up a 3rd you take the insurance for the situations above plus a 3 over just a 1.
We all think Brady is invincible but there is some percentage chance that one of those factors happens. If it's 10% there is a very strong argument that insurance is worth a draft pick.
It makes no sense to pass on that type of compensation unless they plan on keeping Garoppalo past this season.
It makes perfect sense. See above.
I can understand the logic that Brady is 40 & we need a compatant backup, but let's not forget Brady has played every game other than his suspension over the last 8 years.
So, since he will break down at some point, you are arguing that until he does, just ignore the possibility?
Next years draft has 3 highly rated QB's in the draft, so this was the year that Garoppalo provided "value" in the trade market.
Literally zero impact on the decision.
Matt Barkley was a "guaranteed can't miss 1 overall pick" his jr year then dropped to the 4th. Jake locker was the same thing but didn't fall as far.
I don't see the Patriots franchising Garoppalo to be a backup, & I also don't see him signing with the Patriots to remain a backup.
If Brady suffers a debilitating injury they will be stuck paying Jimmy franchise QB money. If not they will tag and trade.
If anyone has a better explanation, I am all ears.
You asked for it, you got it.
