We signed 2 starting caliber off the ball LBers.
We also have Bentley, Tavai and now we matched an overpay offer to Ellis indicating they think he is more than the 5th ILB.
Bentley is in the last year of his contract and saves 4.6 mill on the cap.
Could he be traded for a draft pick?

They asked Bentley to slim down and I'm actually very interested in seeing how that works out.

Tavai looks more like a camp cut candidate unless there's a rash of injuries.

I think Bentley will be there if he's healthy.

Bentley has value especially vs run and short yardage situations. No weight loss will make him a sideline to sideline LB however. They can afford him now and he brings a veteran presence and leadership for our rebuilding. So long term value is diminished but he could stay this year.

The answer is yes. Ellis is tied with Bentley as the 2nd highest paid LB on the team. Bentley and Tavai are the same. As much as I want Tavai gone, his dead cap is high. Bentley could be a surprise cut, especially if he isn't up to speed come training camp.

Holy crap I just looked....Tavai is $6.4m dead cap hit if cut this year.

I know it's only 2% of the cap but what stupid-ass deal for a middling player like him.

Spillane has been signed to be the Alpha Dog at LB. They think highly of Ellis to sign him for the 2nd highest on the team, so I see his snaps increasing. Tavai's snaps on the other hand, are going to drop a lot.

Dunno…maybe they overloaded the LB room because Bentley isn’t far along enough in his rehab?

We will have to see how it works out in August….

Based on those who are more informed regarding athletic abilities, I'm given to understand that any player losing weight (outside of they are just way overweight in-general regardless of position such as Onwenu, who should weigh less than he does), does not always equate to making them faster and/or quicker. That being said, if the sideline to sideline speed and quickness that Vrabel and his DC want out of their LB's (especially those playing ILB) aren't where they want it, Bentley could get traded or cut if his speed and quickness hasn't gotten to where the coaches want it to be. And, despite the cap hit and barring injury, I see Tavai as a camp body/injury backup. I don't see Tavai being with this team this year. If they can trade him for even a 7th Round Pick, he's gone.

For just the price of a cup of coffee a day, you can help save a Bentley…..

For real though, it’s possible. But I have a hard time seeing Bentley cut when Tavai is still on the team. Sure, Tavai has a higher dead cap hit, but it’s still only in the single digits and they can massage that to some degree by designating him as a post-June 1 cut.

They're making him cut weight.
That leads me to believe his job isn't 100% secure.

Biceps injuries are known to recur.
The funny thing about Bentley is everyone hated him and complained about him until he got hurt then missing him was suddenly an unfair burden on the defense and became the excuse for them sucking

I NEVER hated Bentley, he's a tough mofo that works his ass off every play. He's gotten better over the years, maybe Vrabes/team think he'll just be a bit faster if he drops a few lbs.

No it’s the implication of danger

Or, they could trade or cut both.

Bentley being cut would cost 1.8M but save 4.6M. So could he be cut? Potentially. But not unless they need the money. He is very solid depth. If they need cash they are probably cutting Bourne before Bentley, though Bentley is on the block if they need to open up some room.

Unfortunately they don't have an easy way to make a lot of cap space around. I don't think they want to extend Dugger. When it comes to Onwenu i can understand them being hesitant to add more years considering how last year went. Barmore's situation makes his contract one they probably don't want to touch. Hunter Henry is 30... do you want to extend him at this point? They are in a bit of a bad position when it comes to ability to create more cap space with contract moves.... so if they need more Bentley is under the gun for sure.
