Is Belichick essentially our GM?

I had a discussion with several idiotic fans that seem to think that Belichick does not operate as general manager of the Patriots. He has final say over all football operations, correct?

Welllll...yyyyeah.

It might be getting to be just about time to hit the old "Refresh" Button on your Lycos News Page.

Also...

01 ~ The Y2K Scare ~ Year 2000, for Those'f You Scoring at Home ~ was vastly overrated.
02 ~ Your Home is worth about 3x what it was before you disappeared into the Basement.
03 ~ Better check on Mom & Dad. It's 2015, now. You might own that place.
04 ~ Additional Good News: Google "New EngLand Patriots". There've been...developments...since 1999.
05 ~ Oh. "Google" is A Thing. Type it into your InfoSeek or Alta Vista Crawler.

There was an article that came out when Caserio's contract was extended that said he was the highest paid GM in the league. I forget the source. I can't recall where I learned that McDaniels had a competitive contract.

I believe you....just shocked that it hit the light of day. It is somewhat of a departure from what they historically have done but as you say they must have modified the pay scale. With BB's age Kraft might have wanted a little assurance that good people were here just in case.

Not sure what Matt makes. Ave salary for a OC/DC is $850k. Gotta think he is close to that average.

Heard BB was @ $7m annually but never confirmed anywhere.

.......and there are two endzones at opposite sides of the field.

I'm pretty sure I remember Charlie and/or Romeo were making 1+ miilion as an inducement to stay here.

I didn't realize that this was even a question.

I honestly did not realize until now that Belichick did not have the title of G.M., and 'officially' was strictly the head coach.

Josh was being paid $1.5M in St. Louis. I have to think he's probably getting at least that much here, given that he is arguably the best at what he does in the league.

Are these friends making a semantic argument over "General Manager" as a title? If that's the case, Bill Belichicks official title is "Head Coach" and not "General Manager", so if they want to argue that point, that's fine. However, his authority and final say over decision-making effectively make him the team's GM.

According to this source, McDaniels makes well over the 850k that you claim is average. As a matter of fact, he makes about twice as much at 1.5m dollars.

Belichick was reported to have made about 7m as far back as 2007, so one would have to think that he's gotten a cost of living increase in the past 8 years, especially with 3 more SB appearances.

Yep. I remember when Weis was talking to BUF and decided to stay he asked for a raise and got one.

JMD has been a OC for almost 10 years so that makes sense.

Patricia might be a little closer to $1m as he has been a DC for now his 5th year.

With JMcD seeing that much interest in January, it's hard not to imagine him leaving for a HC gig sometime soon. I think he simply acted patiently and waited for the right position to present itself. I don't buy into this "he's going to take over for BB" talk, but that's just me.

I hope Patricia stays, although it's still Belichick who is strongly influencing his calls and who gives final say, no matter what.

He may have title of HC but the Pats designate him their top executive. That means he can't leave for a lesser role such as GM.

I'm one of those that believed JMD is basically coach in waiting. He has the latitude to interview and if he gets sick of waiting can go somewhere else but I think there is an understanding but with no guarantees.

I think we'll have a good idea when the season is finished. If he passes up another half dozen opportunities, you may be right.

Either way, your idea makes sense. I just dont think BB is leaving in the next 3-4 years, that's all.

If you buy into what Jonathan, Bob, Ivan Fears and BB have been saying, he is still very much all-in, going strong and with no signs of stopping.

Also consider that he has seasoned coordinators, strong FO, GoAT QB, young defense, he has a loaded team and obviously not in rebuilding mode here.

Add to that the dynamic of passing down his knowledge and working side by side with his son. That alone is reason to be energized every day.

In other words, Bill has it going pretty good right now and still on top of his game.

We also don't know JMDs story. From 2009 to 2011 he had a pretty unstable life and with small children that taxes the family. Staying in one place, making $1.5m/yr, having a happy family and being part of a great org and winning is a pretty good situation.

Perhaps that was what I was thinking of. For some reason I thought Belichick officially had some other official title (besides head coach) like President of Football Operations, etc.

It's kinda funny. We all know Bill calls the shots but there isn't a lick of documentation that says exactly what BB's title is other than HC of NEP.

Only thing I found was this.

NFL teams can’t block other franchises from interviewing their personnel for head-coaching opportunities unless the candidate is already a head coach, and the Jets interpreted the language in Belichick’s contract to mean that he immediately became the head coach of the Jets upon Parcells’s departure.

Belichick, from gathered reports at the time, clearly thought otherwise. He surely saw the opportunity in New England as a chance to run an entire organization on his own without any risk of interference from Parcells, who was retaining his title of chief of football operations even after resigning as coach. Belichick interpreted the Patriots’ interest as representing a promotion because it included the title of general manager, and when the Jets thought otherwise, there was only one way to test their will.

The Trade: Was Belichick to New England the Best Deal in League History?

Belichick is GM and Kraft is the owner. Belichick coaches and constructs the team using his experience and expertise. Kraft writes the checks. Somebody should explain this process to Jerry Jones.
