Is Belichick essentially our GM?

Well, when Pioli left they essentially split the duties in two between Caserio and Floyd Reese. When Reese left after the 2012 season, Caserio basically became the "GM".

Lombardi's role is really intriguing. I get the sense that BB interfaces with Lombardi to work with football ops on various things. Personnel, scouting, etc.

As an important note, though, he is not officially a GM, because he does not have final say over the roster. This is important because, even with his contract, the Patriots cannot prevent him from interviewing for, or accepting, any position that would give him such control.

Yep.

I said in a previous post on this thread that BB has final say.

Chris Simms and Adam Lefkoe argue that the Patriots have three of the top 10 general managers in football right now (Nick Casserio, Mike Lombardi, and none other than the Hoodie himself)
Surely that's an unfair advantage. Bring on Ted Wells.

He picks out the groceries. Nick pushes the cart.
I don't think that is exactly the correct analogy (though cute). I think Nick is the one who picks the groceries, but BB tells him the kind he likes, and has final say if he wants to buy them.

Not enough time in the the day to be the GM and HC these days. In Casserio, BB has found and trained a guy he trusts to do the heavy leg work. So all he has to do is oversee the operation and have the final word.

I was kidding, Ken.

I don't believe the Patriots officially have a GM. Belichick is the de facto GM and does most of the duties that a GM would do. Nick Caserio probably does alot of the grunt work that Belichick doesn't have time to do. Probably when we traded Homan to the Saints for Nicks, Belichick made the decisions but Caserio did the actual work required to get it done.

Ryan Grigson will be available after he gets fired in Indy to help out around here, for those who are still frustrated with "Bill the GM". He could pull some sweet trade moves, like when he traded a first rounder for Trent Richardson!

Meanwhile, several people love follow the cart around and commenting on anything that goes in or out of the cart as if they know the recipe Belichick is following.

Why did you buy almond flower? Thats just stupid. You can't make chili with almond flower.

Why dont you just go buy truffles and kobe steak? What do you mean you have the least amount of money to spend out of any chef in the competition? Budgets are crap.

Chris Simms is an idiot. Casserio is the highest paid "GM" in the league, and he's signed through 2020. It's true that the Pats used to underpay assistant coaches etc..., but that model has changed since McDaniels came back in the fold. Does anyone know what Patricia makes?

YES

To be honest with you, I can't imagine how a setup where one guy chooses players, and another coaches and decides who to cut or keep can be very good.

Obviously there's examples of it working but it seems stupid to me.

How do you know what Caserio and JMD make?

No offense, but Chris Simms and Little Timmy Hasslebeck

No offense, but Chrissy Simms and little Timmy Hasselbeck are the two dumbest, clueless, jealous," looking for attention" losers I ever had the misfortune to have to listen to. Jeez, can their Dads just ***** slap them? Who knows, maybe their Dads just said "If you don't have a clue, just say something controversial, and you'll get attention".?. ... Sad, but true. I can't stand those two !!!!

There was an article that came out when Caserio's contract was extended that said he was the highest paid GM in the league. I forget the source. I can't recall where I learned that McDaniels had a competitive contract.
