Thanks for the suggestions. Patjew, yours is an interesting one I hadn't thought of, but I think we'll be flying into Providence so it's worth considering.

Being near the stadium would be great but we also have my parents coming to watch the baby and they will probably want to drive him over to New Bedford to see my grandma. Wouldn't Providence be good for that too or do I need to check a map?

I think it would make sense. Providence is about 30-45 minutes away from New Bedford. (I say 45, my wife says 30. We'll compromise and say it's 44.) It's a straight shot on 195 W, which the hotels in Providence are a 2 minute drive from. I think if you were in Mansfield/Foxboro then you'd have to go 495 to 95 to 195, and they're definitely further away from NB (as is Boston).

Smart move flying into PVD. It's a great little airport and easy to get in and out of. Just try to avoid checking bags if possible, because they have the slowest baggage handlers of ANY airport I've ever been in, and I have been in many.

Seems like part-vacation. I'd always prefer to spend a little more time in the car and stay someplace better, but I know some people don't feel the same.

It's funny, I've been in Texas and they consider an hour drive "around the corner". And then in RI many people think of 10 minutes away as across the universe.

maybe its because i drive for a living .for me there is nothing worse than getting caught in traffic on rte 95 or 495 24 i like convenience. i see 95 and 495 on game days and its bumper to bumper . why spend time in traffic when you don't have to. if you stay in mansfield/foxboro you can take back roads to the stadium. and if you have to hit the strip clubs there is a foxy lady in brockton on the easton line 15 minutes away from the hotels in mansfield/foxboro. and there is always alexs in stoughton 20 minutes away. take bay rd the whole way. providence is a ****hole. new bedford take 495 s to 24 s 25 minutes from mansfield/foxboro hotels. 495 is 2 minutes from mansfield/foxboro line hotels. the hotels are nice and clean on the fox/mans line i deliver/pickup pkgs from them a lot during my rte.

I've stayed in the Courtyard in Norwood, possibly 10 minutes away, and the Holiday Inn in Sharon, about three minutes away. Only bad thing is that there is not much to do in those areas.

If you are real looking to party, I'd say go to stay at that dive motel that used to be called the End Zone. They have a huge sports bar inside, which is the only plus. I went to the sports bar a few months ago. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really packed. The owner kept telling me that it gets packed though on game day, both before and after.

I doubt there will be too much partying, seeing as we'll have a 21 month old with us. I'm not sure that really qualifies as a "vacation".

We'll fly in Saturday and leave Monday. The only thing that could be a real issue is stadium traffic, I suppose. Providence does sound like the way to go at this point.

... and if you stayed in Providence that would give you the option of taking the MBTA train right into Foxboro...

Now that might limit the amount of time you have to enjoy the whole "scene" before or after the game, as I don't know how early or late the trains run nowadays - and you might not want to limit yourself in that way - but as far as avoiding traffic, avoiding parking fees and just kicking back and not worrying about much, its the way to go

And with a kiddo Providence can also be a help - if you stay at the Courtyard Marriott you're right across from the Providence Place Mall and plenty of restaurant options and a short cab or bus ride to the Children's Museum, Roger Williams Park Zoo, or other activities to kill some time before and after the game.

Really? THis about seals the deal. I didn't know that about the train....we'll just go to see the game and then back, so it sounds like it would be perfect.

I sure hope so, because I wanted to see something there (besides Bass Pro Shops, that is!). Not like I won't go again, but I hope there is stuff to do this year.

Train is really cool - plus if HOF is open by then. you can visit there, along with all the restaurants / stores / Pro Shop at Patriot Place on Saturday.

Train also leaves from South Station in Boston if you flights work out less expensive from there.

Visiting grandma in New Bedford (or Fall river) is only an hour or so south from Boson

I never, ever, ever hit traffic UNTIL Rte. 1. 95 and 495 have always been clear. Just hit Rte. 1 a couple hours before the game and you're fine. Park on the left of Rte. 1 as you're driving north on it towards the stadium. And I'd always be home within an hour of the game ending (as long as I did not park in the stadium lot).

The train is an easy option, too, but it gives you almost no time there before or after the game.

I'll take the train because I don't need a lot of time there before or after the game. I'm not going to tailgate, and after the game I'll probably need to get back to the kiddo as he will have been subjected to my grandma for several hours at that point. We can always all drive up there to see Patriot Place and hang around on Saturday, if things are open.

Although I seem to have some sort of lucky charm when it comes to stadium traffic (not Gillette, though). I seem to avoid it somehow. Still you never know when that luck is going to run out.

Wow you're snippy. OK, you see it with your own eyes from your house, I've seen it dozens of times from my car. Whatever.

I don't do anything special, yet I have never seen any traffic on 95 or 495. I normally left Providence around 10:30 (for 1 PM games), I think. Maybe those other people left later.
