If the Bengals and Colts lose would you showcase Mallett?

The one seed is on the line. Rest those that have been harboring nagging injuries. Do not rest Brady until/unless the Pats pad a comfortable lead.

But Brady's on the injury report! (wink wink, nudge nudge);.

If Mallet walks for $$$, we get a 3rd comp pick for him.

Would we really get a compensatory pick for Mallett in the 3rd round?

For the record I don’t disagree with your opinion or G’s I was just putting the question out there to hear some feedback, my personal position is that we play are starters and hopefully have a commanding lead at halftime and can give Mallett some reps in the second half.

First of all we are not beating the bills with mallet. So this is not an option. Secondly, its important to have the momentum after the win in baltimore and not lay an egg. So play who is healthy is what they should do.

I was really just putting the question out there to hear what others thought, I would lean towards playing the starters at least for the entire first half. That aside I disagree that we couldn’t beat the Bills with Mallett, I think we absolutely could be a team that is either going to put start an injured Manuel or his backup Thad Lewis who is an UDFA in his second season. The Bills will also likely be without Stevie Johnson and Aaron Williams. If you think that an injured Manuel or Thad Lewis are the superior QBs to Mallett than its best we don’t showcase him ever and we should probably look for a better backup because you must think Mallett is pretty bad.

I want to come clean and say that I overlooked the #1 seed as a possibility in my opening post. The question I asked in my OP is not valid given that the #1 seed would not be determined at the time we start our game on Sunday. I apologize for me error and if a moderator wants to close this thread down that would be understandable.

I'm looking at the more nagging types. Dennard would seem to be as good a candidate as any. Thompkins another one. Ninkovich just injured his ankle today so, depending on the severity of that, he may want to sit.

No, there's always a chance that the Broncos will lose, and we have next week to rest. We want to go into the playoffs on a high note firing on all cylinders!

The patriots will play as if it matters; that is not the issue for me.

The question is which of our many injured players should play, and which should rest.

One strategy is to play as if this is the Super Bowl, throwing all caution/restraint to the winds. Another is to rest some injured players who might be playing if this were a playoff game.

Football players play football.
The best way to be prepared for the playoffs is to play through the end of the season like it matters.
The evidence of this is overwhelming.

Like I said, I'd go with the latter option and I trust Belichick knows the players that he can rest to heal nagging injuries while still getting out of Foxborough with a win and a guaranteed bye.

Nothing like throwing in your back up QB with no first-team practice reps to "showcase his trade value".

:bricks:
Exactly what I planned to observe. I.e., excellent point.

It's impressive how one idea can be bad for so many different reasons.

It's still a valid question with the injuries this team has experienced. Lock up a bye and play the backups is a solid approach to this particular game. If the Bengals and Colts lose, treating it like a pre-season game with Brady and the 1st stringers playing a quarter just to keep the rhythm of a normal week going, and then handing it over to Mallett and Bolden and Ridley to manage would be fine with me. I'm not concerned about playing the Broncos in Denver in the AFCC. They're very banged up, too.

This is what I said in my OP (see quote below).

if they both lose would you showcase Mallett and try to drive up any potential trade value for him?
I did not say I have a great idea let’s play Mallett to drive-up trade value; I posed a question which is why it ended with a question mark. “The only stupid question is the one not asked” – Albert Einstein

Quoting Einstein is nonsensical in the context of this thread Brady6. There's nothing to be gained by playing Mallett unless the Patriots are up by 5 Touchdowns late in the game.

If the Patriots have clinched a bye by kickoff, I'd argue there's little to be gained by subjecting Brady to more wear and tear from that very good Bills pass rush.

No

But assuming that Mallet would be worth a high pick which is the unstated premise of the showcase (I disagree) that means as an FA a GM would sign him to a big $$$ contract which would mean a 3rd round comp pick.
Nevah. Gonna. Happen.

That's all well and good but strange things happen in football. For instance, the Raiders could beat the Broncos on a last second play. The first job the Patriots have is to beat the Bills. From there, it will be to monitor the Broncos vs. Raiders.

I quoted Einstein in reference to what the poster said in reference to my OP. I asked a question to other forum users because I value the opinions of others on this site and like to hear from them it is mind boggling to me why someone would take a shot at that, I don’t care that they think the answer to my question is NO because honestly that is how I would answer the question too but to manipulate the OP into it being this grand idea that I am advocating for is false and then taking a shot at the OP based on the false perspective is unnecessary.

In terms of what you said I do think there is upside to Mallett seeing the field, we don’t watch every practice so we don’t know how he has looked if he has been impressive and scouts have observed that that one live action regular season game could go a long way.

There are also some veteran backups with experience as starters who will be on the market:

• Josh Freeman
• Charlie Whitehurst
• Rex Grossman
• Josh McCown
• Luke McCown
• Derek Anderson
• Seneca Wallace
• Jimmy Clausen
• Matt Flynn
• Trent Edwards

Actually, this is just one more reason why I think that a guy like Ryan Mallett is being extremely overrated by many on this forum.

We saw a ton of journeyman backups this past offseason, and GMs all around the league decided that they'd much rather have a guy like Bruce Gradkowki, Jason Campbell etc (or roll the dice like Green Bay and Cincinnati did with no real backup whatsoever), than give up a mid round draft pick for Ryan Mallett.

When you throw in the guys from this list (add in others such as Michael Vick), and take into account certain guys who may have gained much more attention this past season like Brian Hoyer, or Kirk Cousins for example, they seem to have a much higher possibility than anyone like Ryan Mallett in my opinion.

Would we really get a compensatory pick for Mallett in the 3rd round?

Only if he signed a deal for ~$8M/yr.

But if he were to get a deal for, say, $5M/yr, that'd be a comp 4 or 5.
