If PSU gets the Death Penalty What Happens to O'Brien?

All important records... Joe Pa is now the 12th winningest coach in NCAA football history. Supporters and alumni lose all bragging rights. That hurts those who built and enabled that culture to thrive more than the fines and penalties going forward. They can no longer say well, we were, won, will always have...?

Very significant penalties, the talking heads are saying it is worse than the "death penalty"..

As it is a consent decree, Penn State has no recourse as they agreed to the sanctions..

Brown University has pretty much removed itself from any remembrance of Joe Pa, he is no longer in their hall of fame..

He can't bail due to his contract. $4M penalty on a $5M deal he hasn't seen a hardly a nickle of to date. He only got the job because no one else wanted it. His only options were to interview for the JAGS job...which isn't much better and he probably wasn't getting anyway. He anted to be a HC and he got what he wanted. He can become something of a folk hero himself if he guts it out for three years the greater good. Best he can hope for going forward is a 2 year coordinators job in the low to mid six figure range where he could be axed in a year like Josh, so not much to bail to.

Best snappy twitter comment to date from Prisco (as a come back to the WE ARE chants Paterno led on his lawn the day he was fired...). You were Penn State...

In some ways, this could be good for BoB. He's got absolutely no expectations for him. If he can make Penn State look not abismal over the next few years, he might get a contract somewhere else. Seriously, people are going to look at this as if they can win 3-4 in a season it will be a miracle. That might be enough for his stock to rise for another job in a few years.

I am not saying this is a good thing for him because obviously it isn't when you are a head coach of a team that has no shot of putting a competitive team on the field for the next decade. But there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for him if he beats the low expectations for him.

I have been to two games in happy valley..my dad got a letter to play or try out for penn st in the 70s..

If you think that sucks just think how it must feel to be one of the kids that was raped by Sandusky while JoePa and the rest of the Penn State brass turned a blind eye for 10+ years.

Penn State president's acceptance (of the penalties imposed) speech. I don't like that they get to pay the $60M out in 5 $12M installments. I also think while the money being donated to a charity established to aid victims of sexual abuse in a nice touch, perhaps more practically some of it should have been earmarked to extend the integrity monitoring system and mandated compliance training and independence of oversight monitoring to all NCAA member colleges. Changing the culture at Penn State is only a drop in the bucket. This culture pervades college football where too many HC's have too much autonomy and are treated like demi gods based solely on a perception of them as on field winners...

IMO, this is a big part of the penalties. The old man hung on to the job to get the record, and the NCAA just pulled the rug out and said "what record?" All the Paterno apologists that will say 'yeah, but he did so many great things for kids', and that's gone. This scandal is his legacy, and the fact that the NCAA just wacked him back to 12th all-time puts him in an also-ran category.

BoB issued a statment after the penalties were announced.

"Today we receive a very harsh penalty from the NCAA and as Head Coach of the Nittany Lions football program, I will do everything in my power to not only comply, but help guide the University forward to become a national leader in ethics, compliance and operational excellence. I knew when I accepted the position that there would be tough times ahead. But I am committed for the long term to Penn State and our student athletes.

"I was then and I remain convinced that our student athletes are the best in the country. I could not be more proud to lead this team and these courageous and humble young men into the upcoming 2012 season. Together we are committed to building a better athletic program and university."

Penn State coach Bill O'Brien reacts to NCAA sanctions | PennLive.com

He should bail on them. I'm sure the school told him that the football staff was innocent of any wrongdoing. They lied to him. He should bail on the school based on that alone. Staying could be career suicide.

Billy O'Brien was handed the tools to be a hero at PSU by the NCAA, today.

First, he and his staff can embrace the sanctions and help the students in making their choice of schools - PSU or elsewhere. I suggest he call Roy Williams or Coach K to get some advice on the best way to counsel these kids and their parents - both have helped many kids transfer to other programs or jump to the pros. He should actively help the Blue Chippers to land in a program that will highlight their talents. Penn State is going to suck for a few years and the elite players are better off elsewhere. The bottom line is that these kids should be grateful to O'Brien for helping them make a good choice at a very difficult time. This can be a positive experience for the player and their family. Alumni do appreciate helping kids land where it will work out best for them.

Second, he can field a decent team that plays hard and shows dignity in spite of the avalanche of challenges. Wins do not matter in 2012. If he can recruit some decent players in 2013 and find his way to a .500 record in the Big Ten over the next four years, he'll set the stage for a return to greatness when they get all their scholarships back.

Third, keep the PSU faithful intact and focus hard on marketing PSU home games. If they can keep the revenue coming and continue to underwrite other sports at PSU, O'Brien will be a huge winner. This will be a huge mountain to climb. No matter what, O'Brien has to stay in constant contact with the hard core alumni, be honest and tread lightly on Joe Paterno's legacy. He can't endorse what was done, but he also can't demonize Paterno with this crowd.

Happens quite a bit in college sports, mostly for cheating.

The NCAA probably didn't want a pedophile enabler as the winnginest coach in the history of college football.

Seems like they're looking at it as if he should have been fired at the time he exercised bad judgement in 1998 and taking away the wins is the next best thing.

Interesting, does it effect player statistics in those games? just curious...

Speaking of demonizing, nice to see OSU frat boy Breer getting some push back on his own enablers mindset...

nick wright?@getnickwright

Part of the problem ---> RT @AlbertBreer Congratulations to the 2005 and 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes ... Now OUTRIGHT Big 10 champions.

And there's your "culture" RT @AlbertBreer: Congratulations to the 2005 and 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes ... Now OUTRIGHT Big 10 champions.

The NCAA is like Santa Claus at Christmas, vacating all the wins back to 1998.

A guy at my office who is a Florida State grad popped in and said Bobby Bowden now has more wins than Joe Pa and the Seminoles are now the 2006 Orange Bowl champions!

Oh, rapture!

Just .. wow. Pretty low for Breer, and good on the folks who pushed back. "And there's your 'culture' " indeed.

Edit: Wait, did Breer tweet the "congratulations" bit himself? I don't see it in his timeline.

Edit 2: Well, searched Albert Breer in Twitter and it does look like he tweeted that then deleted. tweet lives on in reaction.

I don't understand this mentality. The memories of the game are still there. Does he go to Total Recall and get an implant of the Seminoles win? I certainly understand the feeling of Bowden being #1 in the record book, but the games?

Complete loss of respect for Breer. What a complete loser.

I don't think the NCAA sanctions were enough. If SMU got a year there's no way PSU shouldn't have received everything they got plus a year and IMO two for this.

He is such a little weasel fan boy...LOL Doesn't even have the stones to stand by his own tweets...

Happens all of the time. Not so much in football but in basketball. The NCAA has vacated wins on a number of teams.

Among other things, they forced USC to vacate their national championship as a result of the Reggie Bush mess.

To be honest this is probably much worse than a year or two of the death penalty. A four year bowl ban and the amount of scholarships they're losing will most likely take a decade to recover from. Also, in terms of tradition the vacated wins pretty much destroys everything Penn State was known for.
