You expect Bill Belichick not to trade down in this draft? Trading down has become Bill's modus operandi.

Well I didn't say I expect it, I said I hope he doesn't.
I don't care if we trade down a few slots but trading from 31 to the 50s to get a 1 next year is not what I would like to see this year.
I recognize the value of it, but I want to actually use the 2 1s this year. That said if its for a pick in the 40s to a team that looks like it will struggle this year, and that pick could be a top 10 next year, it would be a no brainer.

Watch Bill trade down that #31 pick overall and the subsequent picks thereafter.

Then he will trade those picks for a plethora of fourth or fifth rounders. That has been a failure BB. Time for a change in philosophy.

How many years will he keep trying this?

Can someone explain why so many people think we're going to pick a DT early? I thought we were fine there, especially compared to OLB/DE and cover safety.
They aren't fine at DT. Wilfork is the only proven starting caliber DT on the roster right now. I like Fanene/Deaderick/Brace but none of them have proven they can be productive starting DLs through a whole season. Love is a backup NT at best and Pryor is a sub-package DT only. Not only do the Pats need to draft one high, they also should sign a veteran in FA like Castillo or Garay.

He gets MORE by trading down, not less

We haven't won less than 10 games since 2002. Building a roster of depth has worked out much better than most teams who go for the big names that fans crave.

What position are you referring to?
If we are talking about a 34, I think you mean DE.

I see your great point.
I agree.
I like to see them add Castillo. Can't understand why they are setting themselves up for a Goldston whiff where the Bolts resign him. WAKE UP down there in Foxborough.

I like Curry, Crick and Fleener as the typical BB surprise pick if he doesn't pee them away.

Why is it that I can see the other GMs talking in their Draft room-"We need a first round pick to get that guy with talent! No worrries, The Pats will take a few third and fourths!"

I agree. BB stand firm with those two.

O.K. I am not a Koolaider so I speak from common sense. We had the least amount of actual talent of most of the Teams that made the playoffs in 2011. It has been stated many times our offense lacks any playmakers.

What the Helsinki are you talking about in depth??!! We were searching the streets for bodies half way through the season. Please tell me what depth you are referring to? The Roster was made up of many UDFAs and Street pick ups. I see 5 players on the Super Bowl defense that were Drafted. All the fifteen or so others were Trades, UDFA or FA.

On offense our best O Lineman was a FA, out starting RB was an UDFA, our both starting WR were trades. Two of the O Line back ups were UDFA , our back up RB was a FA, and both back up WR were trades.

I am missing your point. I am sorry. These so called down trades for depth is not so true. In fact B.S. Our wins are more from a mixture.

4-3 DT/3-4 DE, same thing

Well, not necessarily.
Deaderick is a DE in the 34 and a LDE in the 43.
Love is a NT in the 34 and DT in the 43
Wilfork is a NT in 34 DT in the 43
Brace is DE 34 and DT 43
Fanene is de 34 and DT 43, but also a DT in nickel/dime which is critical

I'm looking for more Fanene types who can play DE in the 34 base, but as or more importantly can be inside rushers in the sub. Many 43 DTs cannot do that.

Well that is just ridiculous. This team is talented enough to go to a SB.
Tom Brady, Wes Welker (19th most yards ever in a season by any WR) Gronk (best season ever by a TE) Hernandez and Branch are all playmakers.

How many drafted players do you expect a team to have?
Brady, Mankins, Koppen, Gronk, Hernandez, Welker (acquired with a pick) Volmer, Light, Solder, Ridley, Faulk, Edelman, Wilfork, Mayo, Deaderick, Spikes, McCourty, Dowling, Chung and others are all draft picks.
I haven't looked it up, but I don't think you can find a team with more quantity and quality of draft choices on thier roster.

There is a good chance Castillo is damaged goods.

Once again BB doesnt trade a 1st for 3rds and 4ths, he trades for a different 1st plus more. You have to really get that concept if you want to discuss the topic reasonably.

This should be stickie.

If use early to mean in the first 2 rounds, I see no reason for our #3 need not to drafted early.

Are you talking about DE?

I responder to the poster who indicated that DT was a less important need than OLB/DE and a cover safety, and therefore didn't justify an early pick. My point was that if DT was the #3 need, then it should be worth a high pick.

On my personal list, DE is the #1 need. I think that we are thin with Deaderick, Fanene and Brace.

I am more OK with our DT situation, with Wilfork and Love in the 34, and Wilfork, Fanene, Love and Brace in the 43.
===============================
BOTTOM LINE
I would like to carry 7 DL (including a DE pass-rusher like Carter)

current almost locks: Deaderick, Wilfork, Love and Fanene
current placeholders: Brace, Pryor, Harrison

Obviously, Pryor is more than placeholder if he is healthy.

We need to 2-3 DL's. I understand that our 3 non-locks could be chosen from Carter (or other fa), Warren, Pryor or Brace. I think that we have an opportunity to do better.

OK. I agree DT is not a need, other than the 34 DE who slides to DT in sub pacakges, but DE is a need, as in my OP.

Offensively I am good with the roster we have.

Defensively, I see needs and wants.

I agree , on offense I would add some more depth on the offensive line and at RB.

On defense bringing Carter back after camp starts makes sense, even if he returns I think the DE/OLB and DT/ 3-4 DE are priorities. I hope out of the top 4 picks they pick up at least one from each category.

If you say so. Check again.I referred to the playoffs and SB. Koppen, Faulk Dwoling weren't there. I am not buying it Andy.Welker was a Trade.
I don't really understand what you are talking about?

OK, OK I see what I did. That was suppose to say defense not offense. Sorry. I stand corrected.
