Let's just say for the sake of argument that you have GRONK inline, Edelman in the slot, and Hogan outside. Regardless of how the other side lines up, the only difference is how they assign their three corners. Which do you think TFB would rather see?

Option (A)
CB1 on Edelman
CB2 on GRONK
CB3 on Hogan

Option (B)
CB1 on Hogan
CB2 on Edelman
CB3 on GRONK

[FWIW, this question comes from an argument on Reddit.]

Option B doesn't really make sense. So that one. Edelman is the most dangerous receiver in the Pats offense. It runs through him until proven otherwise. Him drawing the CB1 (and also assuming the CB1 has safety help) would be for the worst. The Pats would probably put up 40 if the other team dedicates their top corner to Hogan.

I guess I'd agree with Kontra for the reasons he states immediately above, but my real answer is "Any defense that doesn't have him on his butt 23 times in a game."

Really need to see how 7-11 does first before we can get a real idea. I like that he can also line up anywhere.

Option B doesn't make much sense unless a safety is going to double either of Gronk or Edelman. And even then it would be foolish since you can't double both Gronk and Edelman and if you don't have a really great #2 CB the one between them who isn't doubled will just kill you.

Aside from Denver with Chris Harris I don't know which other team has a #2 CB they could put on Edelman without risking too much.
