Best 3 offenses in NFL history:

1998 Vikings- An overtime loss when the all-pro kicker misses a FG in regulation that would of sealed the NFCCG.

2007 Patriots-.............

2013 Broncos-Blown out of the building.

Will they still be remembered as the greatest offense of all time? Or a soft team that had a favorable schedule that met its match in the SB?

Who cares?

No, seriously. Probably just like that. At least we went undefeated in 2007. The passing stats and TD's records will go down in a matter of years if the rules stay as they are. At which point, they won't be remembered at all.

If you think about it, the same year Peyton threw for 7 TD's in a game, a guy by the name of Nick Foles also did it. Three years ago when Brady was setting passing records to start off the season with 400+ yards games, so did a rookie by the name of Cam Newton. And sandwiched in between, a guy by the name of Drew Brees broke Dan Marion's single season passing record, right after another guy by the name of Aaron Rodgers put up insane passing efficiency ratings. And in the same time span you have all sorts of rookie passers putting up perfect passer ratings every other week, which were a rare sight even a decade ago. That should tell you how much it means to put up crazy offensive stats in today's pass happy league. And also how much the 2013 Broncos will be remembered for their offensive performance.

Did I mention Seattle put up 43 points in their Superbowl win?

I think it makes a harder case for PM as the GOAT (or maybe makes almost impossible to defend). Brady, prior to yesterday, routinely got killed for having the greatest offense ever and get only 14 points.

Well, Peyton's offense smashed the records and only scored 8. So, that argument can no longer be applied to one and not the other. The apologists will continue to speak that Brady always had superior defenses and while that appears to be true, they will conveniently forget that PMs teams were always built around him. Cant say that BB did that for Brady (he's typically had sub-par talent or his talent was injured for the biggest games).

PM is really a great QB and a top 10 player at his position ever. But, he'll need 2 more appearances and wins to get back into the conversation as GOAT (unless we're talking just regular season, he's clearly got the edge there).

From the Denver Post:

Manning was the fourth quarterback to lead the NFL in both passing yards and touchdowns and reach the Super Bowl in the same season. All four — Dan Marino (1984), Kurt Warner (2001), Tom Brady (2007) and Manning (2013) — lost their Super Bowls. By a combined 118-54 score

That's an update of a stat NFL.com had earlier in the week. The margin there (64) is a bit deceiving: Manning's team lost by 35 points and Marino's by 22, which leaves Brady-Warner losing by a combined total of 7 points.

Let's see: 16-0 (Pats), 15-1 (Vikings) and 13-3 (Donkeys). The record alone is the difference, as the Donkeys have a regular season record that is typical of most participants in conference championship games. Few teams can claim only one loss or fewer, so that translates to a dominant season.

I agree with the wide open offenses these records will fall, and the Donkeys will not be remembered. I suspect 1996 will be viewed as a better Donkeys team that never won the title. The Donkeys were a very good team this year, but it is safe to say few were shocked by the loss (this was not a colossal upset by Vegas standards like either the Pats or Vikings - only the beatdown came as a surprise).

OK you made me look that one up and I'm not afraid to admit to my ignorance. I'll spare the others who had no clue like me, the embarrassment.

paraguayan horse
In sports, a competitor/team that is off to a pretty good start in a race/league, usually taking the lead, but will most likely lose strenght and slowly drop positions in the table mid-way through, to finish in an average position. Term originated in Brazil and usually applied to football teams.
Urban Dictionary: paraguayan horse

Yeah, that about sums it up.

Which begs the question why haven't we had a championship defense in 10 years?
Name a defensive player not named Talib on the Pats that matches the top 3 on defense for Seattle.
Pass rush, coverage, physicality, Pats are Chancillor,Griffin, Avril and 2 years away from a SB defense.

What is a Super Bowl defense? You do not need the '85 Bears, or '70s Steelers Ds to win. Last years Ravens were far from elite. Nor were the Giants the year before. Nor were the Saints the year before. Somehow, all teams won the title. Do not take yesterday's game as the new world order, as it didn't even apply last year (the Niners had the better D and lost). The focus has been on legendary offenses that fell short, but how many number 1 defenses can say the same in history?

The Bears consistently fielded great defensive teams hindered by offense in the 2000s, and saw one SB (a loss) due to faltering offenses. A good defense is enough, provided the offense shows up for the game. The Hawks are a product of luck, timing and skill in young players. In two years, this team will be dismantled by non-rookie deals.

The Pats need a good D, but not an elite D. The rules favor offenses. Two last minute drives in 2007 and 2011 do not make the Hawks the new model of success. Let's talk next year if they make the game again. The Pats are consistently in the mix, and titles are not guaranteed - even by great defenses.

I agree; we've basically remade the D twice since 07 and we're still waiting for this second remake to come around.

People say 'if only Talib had stayed in the game, we would've won both the last two conference championships'. But the 04 team lost Ty Law -- who in my opinion was distinctly better at the time than Talib is now -- and still won a championship.
The fact that our secondary relies so much on one player is a huge concern at how brittle it is.

I think we've basically failed at developing playmakers. Maybe Collins/Hightower and Denard/Ryan become that and we end up with an awesome D; but we've been saying 'maybe' for a long time now.

No need to be ashamed, I knew that term because I am brazilian. I looked up before posting to see if it was a relatively known term or only known in South America. I found that definition you posted so I assumed it was known overseas. There's probably a mistake in the definition due to translation, where it's mentioned football teams should be soccer teams.

Actually this term applies perfectly on the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs instead of the Broncos who really had a shot at winning when you look the big picture. Everybody knew the Chiefs were a pretender this year from the very beginning.
