How is that any different than being cut and someone signs you later?
Everyone wee cut could be signed to a contract later by any team whether they are on a practice squad or not.

Agreed. But a lot of guys with families do not want to play anywhere else

It's different because if a veteran player is cut he can remain with the team, practice with the team, and prepare for his role on Sunday with the team.

And you don't have to cut a young player, exposing him to the league when the team promotes the veteran to the game day roster.

Of course, if another team makes a drop-dead offer like the Colts did with Hoyer a few years back, the player is gone. Everyone understands that. But a guy like Anderson won't be in much demand week one.

I don’t think Anderson would have any ties to here after 1 year and I’m sure he’d rather get paid somewhere else than be unemployed here, or make 20% of his salary on the ps.
Otherwise teams would just cut players and no one could sign them because they don’t want to move. It’s part of the job.

He doesn’t have a team to practice with and games to prepare for if he’s cut and “staying home”
He is waiting for a job. Why would he have any obligation to the team that fired him?

It doesn’t take a “drop dead offer” for a 30 year old man to be employed at $1,000,000 a year vs $8000 a week for 4 months with the hope of maybe getting activated once in a while.

Your understanding of how the practice squad works is severely wrong.

I am sorry yours is.

Again. There are three available spots that can go to veterans who do not have to go through waivers. It is entirely their decision where to play. There is no rule against BB saying to the player when he resigns, " This is our plan for you. We don't expect you to make the first 53, but you are greatly in our plans for down the stretch." Here's the offer? Are you in with this plan?

I would be shocked if Bill wasn't upfront with a player like Anderson. From the looks of the restructure there weren't many offers. Anderson has an opportunity with a coaching staff to invest in himself in a system he knows and wants him, while maybe get another decent contract if successful vs a paycheck and be cut in three weeks.

I would not be shocked if other teams do this as well. I believe the reason Chris Long left is because BB was honest with him.

What is difficult to understand?

It’s tough to put together the DL roster projection right now because there are basically three distinct depth charts in this Over front they’ve been using on early downs. It would be helpful to know if Anderson can back up both Wise on the edge and Guy inside, or if he’s only under consideration lining up across from or outside the tackles. Similarly, it’s been Roberts inside and Ray on the edge, so we don’t know which (if either) is seen as having more versatility to play the other spot.

I noticed this recently as well, actually split my roster projection DL position into two separate positions to reflect it. It seems like Wise, Anderson, and Ray all play what I can only describe as "big edge", although Wise has been doing this his whole career here. Reminds me a bit of the type of hybrid 4-3 the team ran in 2011 where one DE weighed 290-300 and the other weighed 250-270.

Of course, but my point has been that Anderson's contract is set up as if this has been the plan.
the team increased his bonus because they planned to cut him?

But the player could stay at home for 1 to 3 weeks and then have a contract on the 53. Not ideal for the player.
The patriots are betting that no team will pay Anderson minimum for the first game, and that every time they put him back to the PS, no one wo;; want him. At least that seems to be the poster's theory.

It will not take a drop dead offer to agree to guarantee himself the vet minimum instead of getting paid that only when the patriots choose to do so.

To be more clear, if the patriot cut Anderson, he will play for the patriots only if no other team wants him at vet minimum. (Deos he even cost that much?).

So Bedard today says it's Cardona, Mitchell, and Ferenz.

I think of Ferenz as automatic and Cardona's contract is even more perfect, plus he can be the most trusted. Maybe after the three games he gets a long term contract.

Mitchell does make more sense than Anderson, but I thought he was more highly rated, and could get a real contract. It depends on who Bill trusts the most.

As my post says above, the veteran seems more likely Mitchell, than Anderson now.

The strategy is no different. When I started the thread I thought Henry Anderson was the best candidate, but as posters like you and Ring have pointed out, these questions are more easily answered with Mitchell.

I think Bedard's three make the most sense.

First you already admitted you were wrong about the “don’t have to go through waivers” part yet you keep saying it.
Wanting to sign them to the practice squad when you cut them does not affect their waiver status. The only difference is that when you activate them from the ps for a game they do not get exposed to waivers when they revert back. It’s really irrelevant any way, because ANY TEAM CAN SIGN ANY PRACTICE SQUAD PLAYER OFF OF ANY OTHER TEAM.

Nothing you say is any different than any player being cut.
Your argument was that Anderson’s contract indicates this was the plan and you have offered absolutely nothing to support that and are now reverting to BB is smart and will tell players he cuts that they could come back if injuries happen.

Of course teams don’t that, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the argument you made which was
1) Anderson’s contract is proof they signed him to cut and out on the ps
2) You can cut a player and move him to the ps with exclusive rights and no exposure to waivers
3) There is some kind of motivation for Anderson to collect $8000 a week instead of at least the veteran minimum which is 4 times as much because the team that doesn’t want him might later and that’s better for hon than a team that wants him today
4) BB is smart so whatever you say must be right.

Thank you for the clarification.

IMO, it is downright negligence to cut Mitchell at this point.

Ferentz would be signed by someone to their 53. After all, he want another year of pay. I believe the same of Anderson.

Let me comment your grand strategy of saving a roster spot for a day or two by cutting a player a having commit to signing at a later time. I don't think that Belichick would want to get Cardona to agree to this.

In any case, a 53-man roster is only critical to board members. Belichick is fine with having 52,and signing another player after the "final" cuts.
And please remind me again why should do this.

This is one reason I thought Anderson was a good candidate for the practice squad swing.

They need more for that position, and some of it is specific game plan.

Belichick said last year (doubt I could find the quote but I remember it clearly) that Anderson is capable of playing and spot across the DL, 0-9.

Mitchell started 29 games and played 1800 NFL snaps the last 2 years.
He isn’t going to sit in a practice squad for 8000 a week hoping he could get activated 3 times.

They agree to guarantee his contract and announce the signing week 4.

Didn't they do this with Folk?

So you want to take a dead money hit to cut him, expose him to being signed by someone taking him seriously as a player and not asking him to play for 8000 a week and risk getting injured, for what?
To keep a different player who wouldn’t otherwise make the team for 3 weeks, then cut the other guy anyway?
Why?
