Having a complete team BEFORE the draft

I like keeping Evans as well. He comes cheap and has a stated desire to remain with the team. Seems a no-brainer to me.

A couple of minor points
==================
1) I agree that we need to make signicificant upgrades at LB and CB, as we draft with a focus on 2008 and 2009, and pick up free agents with an eye on this season.
2) I agree that some on this pre-draft roster will get beaten out for roster positions. I certainly hope so! Otherwise none of the draftees would have made the team! Also, we need midlevel and/or top free agent upgrades, or upgrades by trade.
3) As far as specifics, we can agree to disagree on Evans. bb, pioli, dante and tom value him highly, as I do. He was the blocking back for Rudy Johnson in college. He was highly rated as a fullback, the highest in his draft. He is a OK running back and a fine receiver. He is getting better and better at picking up blitzes. Bottom line, he is a patriot kind of player, just the type of player we want as depth.
4) I would like more of this cap to be used to upgrade the roster THIS year. There will be plenty of cap money in 2008 and 2009. And yes, I am also fine is using some of the cap money to extend players in their contract year.

I think the best way to put this goal is:
We have a roster we can win with before the draft. One with some questions or holes, but one that will win despite those questions and could win it all depending on the answers to those questions.
Then the draft is used to upgrade IF POSSIBLE and to replace the openings that will come up in 2008 and 2009.
That is the perfect plan, and I doubt we will ever be quite there, but being close (which I think we have been since around 02/03) means we can draft players not hole fillers.

Money:
After franchising samuel we are around 18 million .Now take the rookie salary and the 2 No 1 pick salary off. This will put the cap at 10-11 million appx.

so what every we do we need to do it for around 10 million.

It won't cost 7-8M against the 07 cap to sign our draft picks.

Maroney was the 21st pick and only cost 1.15M last year. Even if 24th was that much and 28th was 1M the rest of the picks will be a lot less and that's just over 2M. I would guess it'll cost us 4-5M against the 07 cap, also each team is assigned what it can spend to sign it's rookies. That won't come out until after the compensation picks are announced. I'm sure somebody like Miguel could do a better job of ball parking it than I can. I cannot remember what our 06 number was but I'd guess it was also in the 4-5M range.
