In addition, if the Patriots could find a safety via the draft, they wouldn’t have over $20 million against the cap devoted to that position in 2019.

Hannable: Patriots’ current cap space problems can be traced back to poor drafting in recent seasons

Chung- Drafted by the Pats
McCourty- Drafted by the Pats
Harmon- Drafted by the Pats

So if the Pats pay guys they get dumped on and if they dont pay guys they get dumped on

Oh good, so Hannable did finally stop writing about how the Patriots can’t possible win this past Super Bowl?

The Pats have had issues drafting a number of positions. It isn't helpful that they often are forced to pick at the end of the first round of course.

It is a fact most teams that win the super bowl do so because they have underpaid talent on rookie deals. Look at the past 5 non-Patriot super bowl winners.

The vast majority had tons of talent on the cheap.

The current system has worked out well, and it was a good idea to extend Harmon a couple of years ago.

It may be time to go back to the well next month, assuming the right player is still there. That would allow them the chance to plan ahead for next year.

Stupidest take of the year, right there. Guy's a moron.

Moron is a prerequisite for today's N.E. sports reporter

Ah. I get it. He’s suggesting that the Patriots have to draft a replacement for every guy before their rookie deal is up. Re-signing your own guys that you drafted after their rookie contract is up is a sign that you drafted their replacement poorly. Right? Let’s see. We have 24 starters. Let’s say the avg. rookie deal is 4 years. That means Bill should be drafting a replacement quality starter every 3-4 years. He’d have to cycle each position, right? I’m not a smart dood, but I think with 6 rds. in the draft, it would require the Pats to be hitting on 100% of each round. Year in and year out. Instead they just keep winning Super Bowls with other teams misused talent. Such a lazy front office. As fans we deserve so much more than what Bill gives us.

What other team has 2 quality Safeties who if needed, can give you quality snaps at CB?

The new trademark of Sports Journalism, instead of objective reporting.. just make some really stupid comments and become controversial.

Maybe he will get some + attention on Facebook or Twitter.. either way any publicity is good publicity.

This guy is for real? If they draft well they have to pay 18M to Flowers, 16.5M to CJ, 12.5M to Collins ...

This probably saved them money ...

But, the Patriots make up most teams that have won the Super Bowl? Why emulate teams who have won less?

Patriots drafting had been subpar in recent years. This is fact not opinion. They have the highest amount of veteran contracts to make up for the poor drafting.

Hannable is capable of writing decent stuff but this was a BS take.

Sure- you can certainly say they've missed on some picks here and there no question.

To debate his assertion, the NEP chose to pay their own and have won 3 SBs the last 5 years.

Cyrus Jones preferred over Gilmore? Is he serious? LMAO.

Case closed.

Who says they prefer rookies to experienced vets? Hasn't their approach worked better than every other team? No trophy for best draft without winning that I'm aware of.

Harmon is in danger of getting cut. I think McCourty should be asked to take a pay cut. Chung is a bargain at $2 million.

Why do you think Harmon is close to being cut?

You don't think DMc is playing up to the $9.5 he is due this year?

Don’t agree that high proportion of veteran contracts implies poor drafting. Could be that proven veteran at a good price is less risky than a rookie on a learning curve.

Think about it this way: who would have the advantage in a head to head competition for a roster slot in training camp, a rookie with lots to learn or a veteran pro of equal ability who has several years of learning behind him?
