Guregian: Boutte Requested a Trade Back in April

Only if they don’t sign FA’s that cancel his deal out.

I suspect next offseason will be quieter in UFA because actual cash spending has been up significantly past 2 years. Krafts have not historically done that for 3 years running.

Plus Drake/Gonzo need contracts.

So could be a pretty mundane offseason next spring.

Boutte could fetch a 4 if he signs a nice deal and Pats don’t sign much.
I disagree. I look at the blueprint of 2001, 2002 and 2003. In 2001 they sign a ton of FAs, totally redid the roster. The next year they had most of those guys back and made some small adds (Fauria, Donald Hayes). The flow of transactions is similar to our last two offseasons. Then in 2003 most of the guys we had signed were gone as their contracts had outs and they supplemented with some additions (Rodney, Poole, Colvin, Ted Washington) that were targeted based on what had and hadn't worked in the draft the last two years. I expect similar next offseason. I think they are building from the same playbook, so I expect a few notable FA additions next year.

I'm not saying they go bananas but I don't think they'll be in position to collect comp picks.

I feel next season we might not sign any FAs and probably let go of carlton davis, mack hollins , boutte and probably pop too . We need wide recievers at rookie wage scale. And when maye gets paid only one wr can be paid . So next 3 years are crucial to maximize maye potential to probably get number 7.

Yeah, rookie scale skill players are about to become very important. WR is aging, RB also.

Need players who can be contributors early.

Luckily, Drake seems less persnickety than TB12 was. Bro would banish a WR forever for 3 bad practices.

But is Drake as willing to sign team friendly deals and benefit his teammates instead of just himself?

Will he take less to be more competitive, as Young Tom did?

Worth consideration is that he went out with the concussion against the Ravens, a game right after the Bills game. It did seem that defenses adopted the Bills game plan after that and cut off an element of our passing game that continued into the post-season. Me saying this isn't really a comment on Boutte specifically, but rather defenses seemed to have at least keyed in on something post-Bills.
But he was good in the first 2 games of the playoffs.

9 total targets, 7 receptions, 141 yards, 1 TD, a 42 yard catch against Chargers, 32 yard catch against Texans.

Not on his first big deal after his rookie contract. Tom didn’t sign his real first team friendly deal until 2014.

‘The same’. What has he ever been ? A VG rookie who got figured out and isn’t smart enough to adapt.

I think he was never much to start with…
Boutte could have been the next Doubs, who, btw has really been connecting with Maye.

Not in 2026 it’s not.
A trade to Houston for a 3rd would help them in 2026 and hurt us.
Maybe helps us in 2027, maybe.
3rd is a solid pick at any slot.

NE is deep at WR and need LBs soon amongst other needs. This is Landrys last rodeo.

Yes, a 3rd is a solid pick which may or may not end up a as a productive NFL player.
It doesn't help us this year, and strengthens the Texans.
No for me.
And for the record, they were just talking about this on Early Edition and they mentioned a conditional 6th that could maybe be a 5th.
No thanks.

A 3rd is reasonably but I prefer a player. We will get absolutely torched by TE’s if Spillane or Elliss are out. We need an experienced high quality player at ILB / OLB that can cover and see-ball get-ball.

Player for player trades are very rare, and even rarer player for player where both players are good and actually make significant contributions.

Marcus Jones, Kyle Williams, Jared Wilson, Mapu, Damien Harris, the Pats have had good luck in the 3rd.

WRs continue to go down. Indy just signed Keenan Allen. A 4th that could be a 3rd is worth it.

You use Mapu as an example of good 3rd rd pick?
Yikes!

And you noticeably left out:
Wallace
Perkins
Keene
Winovich
Asiasi
Cajuste
Rivers
Grissonm
Valentine
Bequette
Mallet
..................

That's a stretch.

The most notable players drafted in the 3rd round since 2000 were Logan Ryan, Ellis Hobbs, Stevan Ridley, Winovich for half a season, Damien Harris and Marcus Jones. Not that great of a list.

Mapu was an atrocious player and just another reason why BB got canned. He wasted way too many draft picks on these "I don't know what to do with him" type players. If he can't make it in Houston, he's never get it.

Williams still has a lot to prove.

Wilson was awful at G which he should've never even played. This will be his first test at his natural position.

Losing an element in the passing game and weakening your offense for a 3rd round pick on paper is never worth it. See 2010. The Pats traded Moss and their offense was fools good when the playoffs came around. Rex Ryan clogged the inside of the field forcing Brady to attack the Jets strength on the outside (Revis, Cromartie). The Pats took Ryan Mallett with that 3rd round pick. I think it's safe to say I'd rather have Moss for one last season in 2010 than what they ended up with.

I feel like the players assoc changed some bylaws specifically because of what young Tom did and now very heavily disuades union members from doing that.

If I remember right, I think the NFLPA analyzes the player and compares their next negotiation to the top 5 players at their level. And that player can't go below that average.

I've been thinking about the possibility of trading Boutte lately. I have been strongly against it up to this point, but watching Hollins get open so often today and William's' clear improvement, I'm wondering now if my fear not having a capable back up to Doubs and Brown might be overstated.

I think I'd be fine with trading Boutte to the Texans, but only if I'm willing to take complete advantage of them given their current situation at WR. I'm thinking I'd make that deal of a 4th that could turn into a 3rd at some reasonable point and a 28 6th to make sure we do the deal now so he can get some feel for the offense before the season starts.

Remember that whatever round we get back, it will be a pick that will likely be at the bottom 10 of the round, since the Texans are one of the favorites in the conference. So, maybe the way to go would be a player for player swap. Maybe the Texans have back up ILB who is talented but stuck behind some of their great starting front 7. Their defense is deep. They can afford to make a player swap and we BOTH add players who are improvements to areas that are currently weaknesses. ILB for us, WR for them. Why hope for some ILB in 27 when we can have one now in 26.

That being said, I have no knowledge of the Texan ILB room, just that their defense is alleged to be the best in the league. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can offer up a guy that they'd be happy to add.

I’ve been inclined to be selfish and keep Boutte, but you make some very good points (as usual). You’ve convinced me. If the Texans have an equally talented LB (ILB preferred, OLB accepted, we need Edge too) available for a player for player swap I’d do it. I’d want the player we receive to be at the level of Jacas or Ponder or Swinson at least, because to be equivalent to Boutte he’d have to be ready to start if only there weren’t a roster logjam in front of him. Plus a 2027 or 2028 6th to convince us to seal the deal.

If we weren’t so overloaded with WRs and both Boutte and Williams were both getting most of the snaps it wouldn’t surprise me to see Williams end the season ahead of Boutte. I’m saying that because of the growth he’s shown so far this year, compared to the pace of Boutte’s progress since he joined the Patriots. I’m also considering that Dorner, DeGenarro, and Webb are still waiting in the wings. We are not looking thin at WR atm.

ETA: Grok just dashed my hopes for this. I’m not doing this deal for Marte Mapu! Maybe Boutte for two youngsters, one ILB and one OLB?
