Lets see.

2017 Pats were # 1 passing, # 3 in rushing and # 3 at Special teams.

Might the problem be NEs 31 ranked defense? Nah, they were 5 in some meaningless stat that makes some people all warm and fuzzy.

They gave up
42 KC
33 Houston
33 Carolina
27 Miami
24 Pittsburgh
41 Philadelphia

NE narrowly beat Houston, lost to Carolina, escaped Pittsburgh with a win because of a dropped TD pass. Dodged NYJ because of a dropped TD pass.

31 Pittsburgh
24 NY

No lead was safe unless it was vs a bad team. Jacksonville moved the ball on NE and gave the Pats all they could handle.

I think the organization is aware of the struggles of the defense.

It doesn’t matter if the patriots defense is good, bad top 5 or top 10

Stats mean nothing

Can it match up and get a stop when it needs it. In last years superbowl the answer was no. It wasn’t a championship defense

Neither was Philly's. Patriots trashed Eagles D more than Philly trashed the Pats D. And yet, they won the SB.

Our defense was good in 2015 but got better in 2016, giving up the least points of any team in three seasons. Was it from us throwing all our resources at the defense that offseason? Seems to me we lost Hicks in free agency, traded Chandler Jones before the season and Jamie Collins before the deadline and the additions weren't superstars. Yet after that Seattle game, it all came together and they played great football. And that was getting production from just two drafted defensive players, Elandon Roberts and Vincent Valentine.

I will be truly surprised if we don't end up trading for another veteran at some point, and considering the 2nd and 3rd round picks we added, it might be a solid player.

Also, I can cherry pick games too and show that the offense needed some improvement as well. If we aren't allowed to count on guys like Hightower and other returning defenders, then you can't count on the offense not missing a beat. We lost Solder, Lewis, Cooks and Amendola, plus Edelman and Gronk are certainly injury risks. Are we supposed to ignore all of that simply because Brady exists?

Sonny Corleone is a bittersweet pick.
Not for nothing, but what has Sony Michel done to deserve getting crapped on?

Kid didn't draft himself.

Another season of bad defense. Brady will be forced to bail the team out by being the last to score.

Sonny Corleone is a bittersweet pick.A luxury pick on a team that practices RB by committee. NE really did not need Sonny, but at least Brady won't have to do it all on his own if this guy is that good. He won't be averaging 7 yards a carry in the major league I will garuntee you that.

Yeah, Rivers will be back. He is behind and basically a rookie. Hightower is getting up in years.

New England did not yet address its front seven.

Fair or not, Patriots' draft class will be judged by lack of high-end front-seven additions

I hope you normally wake up ready to attack the day with energy and vigor because otherwise this is a freaking miserable post.

Easy to be in the top 5 in points allowed when you get to face the Bills, Jets, and Fins 6 times per year.

(Bracing for impact)
Is it better to hold a ****ty offensive team below it's scoring average or worse to play them only to be crapped on no matter what.

The secondary is already excellent and the Dukester and the Mcourty brother hasn't played a snap yet. This defense was abysmal in 2017. Good defenses do not disappear in crunch time. They were same lucky the Pitt TE juggled the ball. The Eagles went up and down the field on this defense. You can point out silver linings all you want but they were bad.

2017 NE defense ranked 31st pet Football Outsiders.
Just curious. What has Philly done to fix /their/ horrendous defense. because it's not as though they shut down the Pats anymore than the Pats shut them down.

Agree completely. How someone can be so miserable about the greatest run of success in the history of the game is beyond belief. That so many here are so miserable about it is incredible.
It's the New England Fan Entitlement Syndrome. Felger milks it for all he's worth.

  1. It's reasonable to question what was done for the defense.
  2. It's foolish to think RB was not a need.

But you can't argue the facts.

RB was not a priority, but front 7 is.
What impact front 7 player should they have picked at #31?
