Gronk: Mayo was the Brady of the defense

Overall, Bird did a great job, but both Miami and Indiana had no business losing to New York in 98-99. Bird had no shot against Chicago and LA in 1997 and 2000.

It doesn’t get any worse than what he did. Ungrateful prick.

That wouldn’t have happened had Bob stayed out of the room.

That nickname quickly didn’t age well. Only Pats fans knew he wasn’t a “genius”.
More like ManGINA

Very odd that NFL teams did not try to ply Mayo from the NE staff? The Tom Brady of defense. Offer him a DC job which is an upward move since Mayo was not the NE DC.
You may have forgotten that it looked like he might have been on the verge of being poached by Carolina as potentially their head coach before the Patriots stepped in and went above and beyond to keep him.

He also turned down interviews for the Browns and Falcons

I knew that the Panthers requested to interview Mayo for HC, but he declined.

Thats it? The Brady of NFL defenses had 1 offer from a dumpster fire franchise.

That wasn’t the only one, but that one appeared to be serious enough where the Patriots didn’t want to lose him.

So, the Browns and Falcons were not serious?

No idea. But I remember how quickly things shifted when the Patriots moved to retain him. Either way, like Flores (which was also surprising), he appeared on track to potentially get hired as a head coach that offseason.

And I get what you’re saying, and time will tell what kind of coach he’ll really be. But other teams were obviously interested and the reports said at the time it stemmed from how impressive and intelligent he was during the interview process. Big shoes to fill, so we’ll see how it goes.

As Curran mentioned RK assured Mayo of becoming Bill's successor, Bill knew of this as well and backed mayo. However we know the timeline was sped up a year or two early becuase of how bad the team was..However that was the only way mayo would turn down opportunity elsewhere.

You right, 31 other teams wanted to interview him.. you got me!!!!

We certainly know this. I was referring to the fact they took this step due to the chances of him being hired as as someone’s head, coach, being seemingly high, based on the reports at the time.

Yew, of course. I definitely understood. I was just alluding to the fact so the poster was made aware mayo has multiple opportunities elsewhere. I'm glad he's here. I feel he will become a great HC.. Bill learned under Parcells.. mayo learned under Bill!

Don’t get me wrong, he’s got big shoes to fill. The number one thing that has to happen this season is progress and for the team to play with purpose and hopefully have everything run smoothly. He’ll be under the microscope all season. Hopefully, he’s ready for it.

Agreed. Coaches will figure out how to handle situations as they arise. If Drake is the guy in wich I believe he is.. Mayo's tenure goes alot smoother .. you'd have wonder how would bills career has gone if he didn't draft and develop TB12.?.. Walsh without Montana? I've always asked that question. The perfect comparison to use is Ryan's.. Houston was in a rebuild like us.. they got the QB and they went to the divisional round in year 1. Ryan's is defensive coach like mayo. It's about having the QB.. simply put.

Bird was the Brady of the Celtics.

Not a good Head Coach though.
What are you smoking? He was an excellent head coach. ECFs twice, then the Finals in his 3rd and final year. 69% win percentage. With a small market team…
