Bird was the Brady of the Celtics.

Not a good Head Coach though.

pffft... had half the 'chips brady got in new england...
Very odd that NFL teams did not try to ply Mayo from the NE staff? The Tom Brady of defense. Offer him a DC job which is an upward move since Mayo was not the NE DC.

Bird led the Pacers to a 0.687 winning percentage, made an eastern conference final and the NBA finals. It's not his fault he had to run into Jordan and Shaq/Kobe
Larry Bird was definitely a better coach than Magic Johnson.

Yeah Bird actually was a solid coach. Lol

Certainly a glowing commendation - let’s see how it translates into a head coaching role. While the results were good as a “DC”, working under Bill and alongside Steve has made those results harder to parse.

I watched this episode, and I think the context was more along the lines of "He knew the ins and outs of every play, so he knew exactly where everyone else was supposed to be." I don't think Gronk meant he was as good or as impactful as Brady, just that they were both unequivocally the captains of their units.

Brady was the Bill Russell of the Patriots...
Football is a tougher sport to go all the way in because it's one game and you're out in the playoffs. But 11 titles in 13 years in the league, with one of the losses being due to his injury, is a very tall order.

Who was birds PG?
Why were there no NFL teams trying to get the "Brady of defense" as their DC?

You people remind of delusional Jets fans. They called Mangini the "Man Genius"

Falcons, Browns, panthers.. there is a site I can recommend you for your condition. Better health.com

Players becoming coaches never translates. So many factors go into being great as top dog one almost has nothing to do with the other. Mayo is smart, that’s a good thing. The collaboration station is also the largest coaching staff in the NFL and maybe NFL history… that could be a good or bad thing.

Mayo has to prove he can manage the team throughout the season, handle the highs and lows, has to prove he can manage a game. We’ll see…

I think everyone knew that Mayo was being groomed here. I'm glad to see the change to a former Patriot player.

Mangini ****ed up when he moved on from here, otherwise he'd be no different than other former coaches.

Look how Tuna screwed the Pats. Yet there are plenty of fans pushing for him to get into the Pats HOF.

You mean he was slow and relatively unathletic?

jk. I really liked Mayo as a player and he ran a 4.56.

Absolutely agree. I feel that will help him as he continues to acclimate to being a HC.. you have to start somewhere no coach even Bill came into the job in the very beginning with all the answers.

Overall, Bird did a great job, but both Miami and Indiana had no business losing to New York in 98-99. Bird had no shot against Chicago and LA in 1997 and 2000.

It doesn’t get any worse than what he did. Ungrateful prick.

That wouldn’t have happened had Bob stayed out of the room.

That nickname quickly didn’t age well. Only Pats fans knew he wasn’t a “genius”.
