Gordon to IR

What makes this odd and subject to speculation is that the team apparently cut Tomlinson, practiced, and then cut Gordon.

What did they see during practice that lead to this change?

The Pats knew they were trading Bennett so it would seem they asked Tomlinson to hang around because of that spot.

It was only a few hours. Something changed.

Gordon couldn't move at practice. Injuries caught up to him, he is washed.

They did tell Tomlinson to stay close. I believe they were thinking about moving on from Josh once Harry showed he was close and capable and Sanu joined the team as the both can run the same routes as Josh and then some.

If we set aside the speculation that the team thought Josh was using again (which I don't believe as if they did they would have cut him) I do think, at the end of the day was a football decision.

I believe it was a football decision as well, but now they have an open roster spot and Bennett was traded within 24 hours. It's also unusual, unless you really need the spot, to place a guy on IR when he is close to healing, with the intention of cutting him.

Were they panicking that someone would grab Tomlinson?

It's open to speculation, not fact.

Gordon was awful and needed to be cut. Nobody needed to double team him or place their best DB on him. Gordon struggled to get open. We saw the border line pick play to involve him in the passing game.

The problem was that if the Pats out right let him go, they would be seen as cruel because of Gordons sensitive mental state. So, the Pats used IR as a way out of this quandary. It remains to be seen how Gordon is going to handle this. I for one wont be shocked if he gets back on drugs.

What I couldn't understand was why Gordon seemed to drop so many passes, even before the finger injury.

His head and heart wasn't there imo.

Gordon was seen stretching *prior* to the practice. The Patriots listed Gordon as "DNP" (Did Not Practice). If they lied about that, the league would definitely be all over this, especially with such a high visibility in the press.

Yep.

Might be the Tomlinson and Josh cut are exclusive to each other.

Maybe they thought they had a deal for a TE but it fell through.

Maybe they made one last ditch effort to get thru to Bennett on Tue/Wed but pulled a Crazy Ivan and became an ass again so they cut bait.

As you say....all speculation.

Awful was Dobson and Chad Jackson.

Prior to the Giants game he was on a pace for 60 catches and 900yds. That is not awful. I'll meet you 1/2 way and say he was very average and not as good as last year which is why they think giving his snaps to a Sanu/Harry combo is a clear upgrade.

With that said I agree he was not the same player as he was last year.

The simplest explanation is that Josh Gordon has the kind of injury that can linger a long time, forcing the Pats to go full in with others (Harry, Sanu). Even if he "plays through" the pain, he'll be lumbering.

They IR him because they can't cut a hurt player. They'll waive him since he can't come back anyway from IR and he's a free agent next year, in any case.

Is this possible (I don't know the particulars): They hold him on IR until the trade deadline passes to make sure he gets picked up early in the waiver process and stays put by the team grabbing him, thus likely keeping him off a playoff-level team this year.

I don't like it, personally (no idea from a football perspective), because I like the guy a lot and want to see him get past his demons. I also think he's not a JAG, when healthy - he's an 800-1100-yard receiver who can bull his way into an end zone.

I'd love to see him back on the Pats next year if there's room in the WR corps.

I'm not buying JG release due to nagging injury line. If so, why has BB kept LaCosse sitting on the bench almost all season who is actually injured to the point he can't play. Why not IR him and free up a spot.

Something else is going on. BB is punishing Tommy for Schefter going on and on since Sunday about him not coming back next year. He took away his last new toy (JE is Woody) and shipped JG out.

Power struggle between whom?

Exactly. It really is an absurd contention, especially when it is common knowledge that they went after numerous higher cost options.

Agreed.

I really hope the smiley means this is a joke.

Until I saw the emoticon at the end I felt pain reading this. Well done.

Come on. Kernel of truth or not, do we really need to write this ****? Let's take a "glass is half full" attitude when it comes to the guy's mental well being.

Regards,
Chris

The truth is sometimes unpleasant as is taking responsibility for one's actions.
