Some decent opinion and study here:

Creating God in one's own image : Not Exactly Rocket Science

For many religious people, the popular question "What would Jesus do?" is essentially the same as "What would I do?" That's the message from an intriguing and controversial new study by Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago. Through a combination of surveys, psychological manipulation and brain-scanning, he has found that when religious Americans try to infer the will of God, they mainly draw on their own personal beliefs

I read one last week that proposed religion as a survival mechanism ... I think this story and that story go great together. What would God do ... what would I do ... and religion is a very socially binding thing. What would God do ... what would we do ... what is best for us. I think they all go together and kept man alive and prospering through thousands of years.

I wonder how often God would go for it on 4th down?

God wouldn't ever need a 2nd down, let alone 4th down. At least any God that's efficient. I like George Carlin's quote on our world "This is NOT the work of a supreme being. This is what would happen if an office temp with a bad attitude was in control."

It would be cheating because he would know whether he was going to succeed or not. I will say this, though. There is no way he would hand it off to Sammy Morris two weeks in a row.
