Some decent opinion and study here:
Creating God in one's own image : Not Exactly Rocket Science
I read one last week that proposed religion as a survival mechanism ... I think this story and that story go great together. What would God do ... what would I do ... and religion is a very socially binding thing. What would God do ... what would we do ... what is best for us. I think they all go together and kept man alive and prospering through thousands of years.

For many religious people, the popular question "What would Jesus do?" is essentially the same as "What would I do?" That's the message from an intriguing and controversial new study by Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago. Through a combination of surveys, psychological manipulation and brain-scanning, he has found that when religious Americans try to infer the will of God, they mainly draw on their own personal beliefs
