Gilmore traded to Carolina

Stop being such a drama queen. No one said he sucks and is being carried. You said his line was terrible, fine, that terrible line gave him all day to throw against the Saints. Imagine if Mac had 5 seconds to survey the field.
He had a terrible O-line last year. You can watch 5 second highlight clips all you want but it doesn't change anything. I like Mac more than I thought I would but to be honest if he was given 5 seconds to throw I think he would check down. I don't know if the coaching staff is telling him to play conservatively or if thats just his instincts but even on that double pass I saw multiple beat guys on Twitter say he had Agholor open deep and he checked down underneath. I like Mac but I think his ceiling is significantly lower than Herbert's. Herbert is close to elite already and he had only played 19 games.

Below are numerous articles on how bad LA's offensive line was last year.

Herbert produced his big numbers while playing behind a mediocre - at best - offensive line. The Chargers ranked 28th in pass-blocking efficiency according to Pro Football Focus. The unit allowed 201 quarterback pressures a year ago, second-most in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.

L.A. Chargers’ Brandon Staley: Justin Herbert should be ‘as good as he can be’ behind revamped offensive line

Last season, the Chargers’ line struggled so much that four new starters were imported. Linsley and guards Matt Feiler and Oday Aboushi were signed in free agency and left tackle Rashawn Slater was drafted 13th overall.

The only holdover is right tackle Bryan Bulaga, and he was limited to less than 40% of the 2020 offensive snaps because of injury.

Yes, he threw for 4300 yards last year. Right now, if it was a 16 game season, Mac is on pace for about 4100. Lots of season left, but from a yards perspective they are pretty comparable so far.

And Herbert still had better skill players. You would probably want to make your comparison at the end of the year.

Herbert definitely has better skill players. Allen (who Bill should've taken instead of Dobson) and Mike Williams are significantly better than what we have. Maybe if/when Mac gets better weapons he will stretch the field a little bit more but I just don't see him in the same stratosphere as Herbert.

He was the 15th highest paid CB in football.
6th CB AAV when it was signed, and with a ton - $40 million - guaranteed. Absolutely top of the market deal when he signed it. But that's the problem now, and why teams have to be more careful about front-loading - the players just hold out in that last year.

it's also why some contracts that might now look like overpays will be bargains down the line,a s is usually the case with an ever-increasing cap.

I really don’t care that they didn’t pay him more. I care that they let it get to the point where he was only worth a 6th round pick. That’s a mismanagement of assets and the same thing happened with Garoppolo.

Some posters have mentioned the possibility of Bill being fired. Thing is, who is out there and available that's a better coach than him?

There are none.

Would Kraft want to be known as the guy who fired a 6 time SB coach? It would send shockwaves throughout the sports world.

Posters on a message board. Enough said.

I don't know if he will ever be "fired". I would think there would be some sort of face saving step down type thing if things don't turn around in the next couple years.

What happens if the Patriots miss the postseason in 2021 and 2022. Bill decides he wants to coach in 2023. Kraft wants him to retire.

Point is if he doesn't want to step down, there's an issue.

Idk.

That's hypothetical.

If that's the case then I think he does get fired or he "steps down" and coaches the Giants.

I can't imagine a 72 or 73 year old Bill wanting to coach one of the worst organizations in sports.

Herbert came from an East/West system. Lots of short stuff, predetermined stuff. Evaluating QB's is hard.

Beauty of hindsight.

Obviously using hindsight means Brady goes #1 OA in 2000 draft.

It's tougher in the moment of course.

That said, GM's still need to somewhat be held accountable for the end results.

Grier ended up making one of the worst decisions in franchise history. It'll likely cost them another decade or so of mediocre football.

He has a soft spot for the Giants. In that Football Life doc he cried when he was talking about coaching there while he was at the Meadowlands. His mentor Bill Parcells has been an ops/advisor for a few teams now in his 70's.

I'm not offering a should/shouldn't comment here. I just want to point out that firings aren't always about getting a "better" coach. Sometimes a coach just has to go, for whatever the reason.

Would he be ok coaching a team that gave him one of his most devastating defeats in his coaching career?

That was like 14 years ago though. Not sure if it matters. Bill probably doesn't care.

Agreed.

I just think if the possibility of firing him is brought up, replacements should be named.

McDaniels?
O'Brien?
Doug Pedersen?
Mayo?
